Concert: Steampunk Style
What does the word Steam, and the word Punk have in common. Besides the amount of hot air that comes out of punks mouths these days, the term Steampunk, believe it or not, is a real thing. I would like you to imagine for a moment, a world filled with modern and even futuristic technology, powered mainly by steam. That is the first part, stay with me here. The punk part is actually a clever ploy, as the dress in this "fantasy world" is chic old fashioned clothing. The classic steampunk is a futuristic, flying machine riding, crazy contraption making, classy dressed individual.
While the picture is not of the greatest quality, these fine young people accurately fit the "Steampunk" genre.
So, what does this have to do with me? (Or you for the next minute or so if you are still determined to read onward)
Well, it just so happens that I have recently been to a concert in which the main band is "Steampunk" themed. The bands name is Steam Powered Giraffe (no joke) and I went to this concert at the Four Points Sheraton here in SD with some friends this last Saturday.
Regular stuff right? College kids going to a concert, right? Oh wait, I forgot to mention, one of the girls who planned the trip mentioned it to her parents, saying that she wasn't sure about rides (as none of us had cars), but she would work it out. Natural Parental Response (NPR for short) say "good luck!" and let her call in a favor to find us a way there. But are these parents normal? Nope, they are a new breed of Parental Units, ones I am dubbing "Cool Parents"
The reason I say this is that their NPR (Natural Parental Response for those of you who skipped the last paragraph because it was "too many words!") was to rent us a Limousine! I kid you not, we, college teenagers, went to a steampunk concert in our "civies" and chilled in a limo on the way there and back.
That is the view from the middle, and here is the view from my side of the "dope ride" as the kids say these days.
Unfortunately the camera was a little shaky on my part (Ok, it was really shaky, I am a science major, not a "steady hands major" alright!)
And the concert was an expirience in it of itself, watching the band members (who looked and danced around on stage like robots. And were ridiculously good at it), seeing the interesting people, and of course the music was all amazing.
And to top off the whole night, we went on a famous college "burrito run" to Aldaberto's Mexican food, once again, I feel like I must stress, in a limo!
I was really hungry....
Overall, it was an amazing night. I might have stressed the materialistic when describing it, but it was not the band, nor the people watching, nor the food that made the night. It was the friends that I had there with me that made it amazing. I am honored that they let me tag along for the ride (pun totally intended). They are amazing and i can't imagine a day without them. (insert Smiley face here)
Thanks again guys for a great night and a great memory to look back upon.
Steampunk powers of transportation, ACTIVATE!! Away into the night we Ride!
(Wait, that only works when you are in costume!?!? What? Why did no one tell me this. *sigh*, I'll be back, just give me a minute to squeeze into my Victorian era dress tights...)
