Every once in a while, I tag along to an adult literacy class. It’s good to see how women are progressing and to give feedback to the teacher.
At one of the lessons, Sarah showed her homework. She was told to write a list of 10 oppositions, like fat - skinny, old - new, different - same. Sarah presented her list, which was great, but the last one made me frown. It said
pray - worship
‘That one’s wrong’, is the first thing that comes to mind. But hey, we’re in a totally different country, and we might as well be thinking of a cultural difference here. “Why did you write pray - worship as an opposition, Sarah?” I asked. She looked at me, slightly confused, not understanding why I didn’t see it clearly. “Praying is something you do alone, by yourself,” she said. “Worshipping is something you do in a group.” And so, the teacher is taught.
