"SHIPYARD MEN EAGER BUYERS: Roaring Trade In Bushwood," The Province (Vancouver). September 15, 1943. Page 5. ---- Scowloads of bushwood shipped here from Lasqueti Island, about 50 miles north of Vancouver, for employees of the West Coast Shipbuilders Ltd. and associated companies, are being snapped up by the workers as fast as it arrives, George Conway-Brown, the shipyard's personnel supervisor, reported.
Less than a month ago, the same company was considering cancellation of its bushwood contract, owing to lack of response from employees to its offers of winter wood supplies at the ceiling price of $12.50 per cord.
"Now we have more orders than we can fill, and have arranged to increase shipments to cope with the growing demand," said Mr. Conway-Brown.
"We expect at least one 100-cord scowload of bushwood per week from now on," he added.
He attributed the city war workers' previous indifference to bushwood to their hope of getting cheaper millwood. But now, realizing that millwood supplies are all but unobtainable, the men are eagerly ordering bushwood - and at the ceiling price.
