They’re laughing because they’ve achieved the ultimate 1973 aesthetic: looking like they’ve never seen a carbohydrate in their entire lives while sporting haircuts that require more hairspray than the ozone layer could ever forgive. It "works like a diet drink," which in 1973 terminology usually meant "tastes like a battery but makes your swimsuit fit."
