Bussaco Palace, Luso, Portugal
Bussaco Palace. built by the Portuguese royal family, but has been a grand hotel since the abdication. The forest next to the palace is of major importance as it has been a botanical garden since the 16 th century and holds many specimens from the former colonies. One of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. photo from around 1990.

A few more details from the palace itself to give you a sense of it before I start going on about the ancient woodland surrounding it.
After Monsanto we spent the next two nights, the last of the main tour, at Buçaco, or Bussaco Palace. The palace was built for a king as a country home and hunting lodge at the end of the 1800s but he was assassinated soon after and while it was still in almost new condition it was made into a hotel. By American standards it is not very expensive to stay there, considering. It was magical to stay in and walk around a palace that was built for royalty. The gardens are beautiful too, even in November. I’ll do another post about the woods around it. The second evening we got to watch a Portuguese ritual folk group, Drusuna, perform there.
