A Terrible Fate Broken?
Being the Hero of Hyrule was a curse. It has been a curse caused by a never ending cycle created by Demise. Even if the hero wasn’t a reincarnation, he still had to fight. They thought that reincarnating over and over again was the only part of the curse. But it wasn’t.
Whoever the hero fell into a deep loving relationship with, was fated to die before he did. Nothing could be done to prevent it. His lover would always die. Whether it be a peaceful passing while asleep, a dumb death due to being bit by something innocent, or a heartbreaking death in a battle. Every hero had tried to prevent it with no success.
For the Hero of Skies, his lover fell to their doom. Nobody would’ve been able to catch them in time.
For the Hero of the Minish and Light, his lover died due to Vaati. Vaati had thought that they held the Light Force in them, so he had drained them of their life energy.
For the Hero of Time, his lover would die no matter what. Even with rewinding time, they kept dying a different way each rewind.
For the Hero of Twilight, his lover had been nabbed by a Shadow Beast. Through the Shadow Beast’s transformative magic, his lover became one of them and he had to put them out of their misery.
For the Hero of Legend, his lover suddenly got erased from existence. Veran had killed one of his lover’s ancestors in secret.
For the Hero of Hyrule, his lover got kidnapped by cultists. Trying to weaken his morale, they killed his lover right in front of him.
For the Hero of Winds, his lover drowned. A monster infested ship fired bombs, blasted his lover off of the King of Red Lions and the impact had made them sink down too far to be rescued.
For the Hero of Warriors, his lover had been killed out of jealousy. Cia had wanted him all to herself and his lover was in the way.
Though it hurt to lose his lover, he cherished what time he got with them. They had both wished that they could’ve died of old age together. On bad days after their death, some of them considered putting themselves into early grave so they could join their lover in the afterlife sooner. Thankfully they had the support of friends and allies to distract them from thinking like that.
Every other hero met their lover either when they were both really little or during their journey as a hero. But one hero was different than the others. He was known as the Hero of the Wild. He technically died before even meeting them. It was after he’d woken up from his magically induced coma a century later, that he’d met his lover.
Maybe they’ll both die of old age together this time? Link had technically died first after all. His lover had managed to survive his entire quest of freeing the Divine Beasts and defeating Calamity Ganon! They both lived through the next year peacefully. Then the next journey for him happened.
He and Y/N had found a dark purple portal in the Faron region while gathering some Hearty Durians for future meals. It had a rather menacing aura that strongly reminded them both of pools of malice. Link motioned for Y/N to stay behind him as he inched closer to the portal, his hand gripped the handle of his sheathed sword. He reached his other hand forward towards the portal. His hand went through the entrance of the portal, making it ripple like water.
Huh, that’s odd. He was able to pull his hand back out and there appeared to be no adverse effects. He told Y/N to stay behind, feeling the need to investigate what could be on the other side of the portal. With one last look at Y/N, he walked through and eventually disappeared. Y/N was immediately worried, and despite being a person who took risks, they felt the need to follow him.
With a deep breath, they hesitantly went through the portal. After a few moments where everything was pitch black, colors returned. The portal had lead to another forest, but it wasn’t as hot or humid. Y/N didn’t recognize this forest at all. After a bit of panicked wandering, they caught sight of Link.
It looked like some travelers had found him? Were they locals? Hmm, maybe not… Their attire was too outlandish. Now that Y/N thought about it, some of the strangers strongly resembled the ancient Heroes of Hyrule!
They noticed Y/N before Link did. They were immediately tense for a moment, anticipating that the stranger was a monster in disguise. Link noticed their tense postures and turned around. Drat! Y/N had followed him! He knew that they were a worrywart, so it didn’t really surprise him.
He introduced Y/N to the others, telling them that Y/N was his lover. They suddenly calmed down and bittersweet nostalgia overcame them. Y/N… that was the name that their lovers had. Wild’s Y/N looked exactly like theirs to a tee. Even their voice and personality was the same.
They were surprised to see that Wild’s Y/N was still alive. Maybe the moment of the fated death hasn’t happened yet. Honestly they were glad at least one Link got to be with Y/N longer than they had.
Overtime, they all got closer and learned more of each other. The other heroes told Wild that they also had the same lover as he, but Y/N would always die before they did. Wild then brought that he technically died first and then met Y/N after he’d woken back up. He also told them that he managed to keep them alive during his hero journey.
Despite learning he died first, they were still worried that Wild’s Y/N would die. What if him dying didn’t change Y/N’s inevitable fate? But they did hope that it broke the curse and that them two would die happily of old age. All members of the Chain did their utmost to keep this iteration of Y/N alive and safe…
