Why does this arc have a lot of potential that can be easily wasted, and why Atsushi can be «that man»?

Why, even if Fyodor ends up living, it shouldn't be Atsushi's achievement (although we're in a manga, so anything is possible)

It was hopeless. He'd long since been resigned to that fact. He'd had to have been, from the very moment he realized that Itchy wouldn't, that he couldn't love him back. Not that it mattered much, when he thought about it. He never would have gained the courage to tell Itchy anyways, even if he didn't already like someone else.

And that was the worst thing. It would have been tolerable, maybe, if Itchy had been in a relationship already. Doze was used to pining from afar. But no, instead Itchy had decided to fall stupidly, head-over-heels in love with the man who hated him most.

And Doze couldn't stand that.
