Some rough sketches which began as a way of practising drawing Jenna in particular, since she is the Series 1/2 character I find most difficult to draw. Anyway, I started with ‘What if Jenna was a Formula 1 racing driver?’, which is always a good question to start with in any situation, which led to this:
(Yes I am not good at cars. Is her car called Liberator, or is she sponsored by the Concept of Freedom? Also yes.)
Of course, Jenna has a team behind her, so now here is a smudgy sketch of some of them:
Blake is Jenna’s chief engineer, of course. Vila is... team mascot and general dogsbody, also a useful source of information about any shady goings on in the competitive world of racing. This is a Blake’s 7 AU, after all- if there weren’t shady goings on, none of the characters would know what to do with themselves.
(Vila is also far too smol here- perhaps he is standing on a lower step, or perhaps the artist struggles with relative size, honestly I think we will never know either way.
Anyway, while looking for reference photos, I found a lot of really fantastic images of drivers like Kay Petre, a Canadian-born motor racer who was racing in the 1930′s, so now the whole AU thing jumped back a few years, and here now we have Jenna in a racing car of the era, with appropriate headwear:
Of course there are still shady goings on. Jenna has a Past with a capital P, and perhaps something from that Past rears its ugly head. But Jenna still has a team who are not going to let her down. Cally, who got Jenna out of her old life, is particularly not going to let that happen.
Neither is Blake, who is also Jenna’s engineer in this time period. He met Jenna through Cally, as he and Cally have similar political leanings, and inclinations to active participation in those politics. Here are Blake and Jenna, mainly because I liked the pose:
(Very rough sketch done in a page corner, but one I would like to work up properly at some point.)
So basically, Jenna, Cally and Blake are trying to win races, avoid the Past and use their powers for Good. The last thing they need are a pair of con-men- but that’s fine, because there aren’t any con-men here, and-
Oh good God. Can you even do cons based around racing driving? Doesn’t matter, Avon and Vila are going to try. Of course, what is actually going to happen is they will end up helping Jenna, Cally and Blake, against Avon’s better judgement.
There will almost definitely be a car chase and an attempt at sabotaging Jenna’s car, and other exciting moments, but in the end, Good will Triumph and everyone will go home and have a cup of tea and a sticky bun.
So that’s my attempt to string some doodles together into something. Here is a picture of Vila saying ‘zoom’ as a reward for getting to the end.
