Alright, let’s take a fast look at the volume 4 bonus material before heading on into the rest of the sports festival.

First off, the volume cover:

Looks like Ochako’s gonna be the character on the spine, which makes sense since she’s the heroine of the story. It’s a shame her fight with Katsuki isn’t until the volume after this, but alas, she still has a large role to play in this volume.

It’s also neat how the characters featured on here are the characters who make up the three teams who get through to the finals (barring Shinsou’s team) - Team Todoroki with Momo, Tenya, and Kaminari, Team Bakugou with Sero, Mina, and Kirishima, and Team Midoriya with Ochako, Mei, and Tokoyami. Basically highlighting who we’re gonna be focusing on for most of this volume.

...oh my god, I just realized the glove Mei is wearing looks JUST like the gloves Izuku will be getting as part of his hero costume a bit later on.

Alright, not as much as I was thinking it was, but there’s enough similarities that you can tell they were from the same person. I wonder if the gloves above were what she based Izuku’s gloves off of...

Anyways, moving on. Hori’s intro blurb:

Next up is the inside cover art for the volume:

Those skirts are a bit short for comfort, but I suppose that’s just Japan for you. More notably, the first thing that gets my attention is how nervous Momo looks to be doing this - as well as that knife strapped to her leg. In before fic where Momo gets to learn how to use a combat knife from Aizawa?

But yeah, it is interesting that despite the cheerleader costumes, there’s little bits and pieces of their outfits that still suggest that they’re ready to fight at a moment’s notice - they’re all wearing flat-soled boots, Mina and Hagakure have goggles on, Mina has kneepads, Momo has a belt with supply pouches. A nice nod to the fact that they ARE heroes-to-be, even out of costume.

Moving on, we have the character page and some summarizing blurbs:

I love how Aizawa is doing a pose with a lot of the rest of the class. What I love more is that All Might and Izuku are doing the exact same pose. What fucking dorks, I love them.

...oh fuck though.

Anyways, last pre-chapter page, the table of contents:

Neat how the title is made of Shouto’s ice. Also interesting how it seems like Izuku is trying to reach out to him, even though Shouto has isolated himself up above and away from everyone else, looking away from the viewers. Truly an island unto himself.

Anyways, there’s nine chapters in this volume, the first four of which cover the cavalry battle, and the last five which transition from that into the one-on-one tournament event. I think the battles covered in here are Izuku vs Shinsou, Shouto vs Sero, Kaminari vs Ibara, Tenya vs Mei, Mina vs Aoyama, Momo vs Tokoyami, and Kirishima vs Tetsutetsu. Also Ochako’s preparations for her fight, but sadly the fight itself isn’t until volume five.

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting this amount of meta and thoughtfulness out of literally the pre-chapter volume material. What the heck. I might be reading a bit much into some of this, but... whelp. The point of this blog is overthinking things.
