“Why not?” That’s the question I always asked, while everyone else was asking, “Why?” Why do things differently than other people. Why question the status quo. I couldn’t understand it. Why not? Why not examine what you really want instead of simply following convention? This attitude, it probably won’t surprise you to know, isn’t popular. When you question why the world works a certain way, it feels like a challenge to anyone who is just going along with it. Some people get defensive. Others feel offended. Mostly, people will tell you that you’re the problem. The thing is, I never expected the world to conform to my expectations. I just wanted to go my own way. I wanted to drink tea instead of coffee, even though everyone drinks coffee, because I don’t like the taste of it. I didn’t write it off without trying. I always knew my life would be simpler if I could just force myself to be more like everyone else. But once you’ve asked why not, once you’ve considered what really might be possible, there’s no going back.
