Incredible, wood-inlaid Art Nouveau Butterfly bed.
With all the new growth happening in the garden, I wanted to document some of the great seeds that lasted the winter. Park of me thinks this is sad, because it means not enough were eaten over the winter by wildlife, but part of me also thinks that it means they’ll be leaf over for different life to eat when they fall to the ground? Ants need munchies, right?
Pictured are milkweed pods (doesn’t the one with the seed hanging down look like a duck?), burrs, and the fantastical black-eyed-susans.
Passerby liking some flowers so much she wanted to take them
I thought it was going to be a pleasant interaction with the lady when she stopped to compliment the children playing, and then took interest in the butterfly garden. She asked after a few of the flowers, and then zeroing in on the bee balm, she asked if she could take some by the roots. I, I, I, didn't want her to, but at the same same same time thought it was nice she wanted them and understand that gardeners do that sort of thing. I suggested maybe next spring when they've had one more winter under their belts to strengthen. She was like, nah, they are tough, and then walked right into the deepest part of the garden, over the turtle heads, on top of the bottle brush grass and then riiiipppped four or five stacks out of the ground. Oooomfp. A punch to the gut it felt like. Oh my goodness was that uncomfortable for me. So much of the garden tasks are planned and agonized over and researched so much before I do anything, this was way too spontaneous. I hadn't really processed before how much the space was under my protection, and I guess jurisdiction. "Nobody should be touching it" my brain screamed. "Enjoy the flowers, I hope they do well in your garden" I said instead. 😫😢😱
