Winston

How often I use him: Stats show that for Quickplay he’s my 4th most used character at 4 hours (out of 65). I’ve used him for a total of 8 minutes in competitive lmao, I’m not good at him. Behind D.Va, Winston is the tank I use the most and try to get gud with.

Which maps I like to use him on: maps with lots of high ground and not as many edges. I did the best with him on Oasis, though that might’ve been because not as many people were familiar with the map at the time, haha!

What skin I currently have him on: the Lunar New Year skin! 

Who I ship him with: I ship Winston with science.

Mercy

How often I use her: Stats show I’ve used her for 4 hours on quickplay, and only 13 minutes total in competitive. I’ve only started playing her very recently - which is strange as a healer main, I know.

Which maps I like to use her on: I don’t really have a preference, but I think I’m best with her on payload maps in particularly confined spaces like Kings Row - teammates are less likely to wander away from me.

What skin I currently have her on: also the Lunar New Year skin!

Who I ship her with: I don’t particularly ship her with anyone, but there was a really cute Mei/Mercy art a while back that made me think “ACCEPTED.”

Saw your comment on adirotynd (I love finding more people in the Furuba fandom) So I take it you agree with her interpretation with Shigure? Why do you think he fell for Akito though? Like what started it?

Oh man, Furuba was my jam in high school - it was one of the first, if not the first manga I ever read, and I still have a lot of love and admiration for it.

About Shigure, it’s not so much that I think “Shigure is 100% a complete sociopath and there is no other way to correctly interpret his character,” but more like, it totally is one valid and compelling way to interpret his character, at least as far as my spotty memory of the manga goes.

I mean like (spoilers? It’s been out for so long but just in case) he sleeps with Akito’s mom just to punish Akito for sleeping with Kureno. Like, he knew how much she fucked Akito up and how much Akito hated her, yet sleeps with her anyway for what I can only think is to cause Akito max damage. He never shows any remorse about it either.

About loving Akito, Shigure talks about how he wanted to hold onto the feeling he felt the day Akito was conceived. We never really see them falling in love with each other based on their shared experiences/personalities - Shigure felt something the day Akito sprung into existence and wanted to hold onto it, “no matter what obstacle is in my way, no matter who I use, even if the result would hurt someone, it will be fine with me.” Kinda romantic? but also pretty obsessive and cold.

As far as I remember, he can do sweet things and gives people good advice, but a lot of what he does for other people is to service his own agenda (ex. Taking in Yuki, Kyo, and Tohru), and he hardly ever seems affected by the suffering of others. He also never shows remorse causing others pain, which is shown in ways both comedic (his poor editor), and… not comedic.

I’m not saying he doesn’t love Akito, but he does feel like someone who has an amiable and charismatic facade that masks an incredibly selfish personality, with little regard for others’ feelings other than how they align to his own wants and needs, and his one main want happens to be Akito.

I get your point about Death Note but I'm honestly just a little disappointed that an Asian story got morphed into a black-and-white race thing for the American version? Like I get wanting to explore the tension between murderous white people and the black community but I wish an Asian story could have stayed centered on Asian characters.

Your frustration is totally understandable, and honestly it’s my frustration as well with the overall trend in Hollywood. And even with Death Note specifically… sometimes I think, what if, at least L was Asian American? How about that?

But I think representation onscreen is only one of the fights with Hollywood - there’s also the fight for Asian and Asian American creatives to have more influence and opportunities in the industry. And in this case, Dean Note is not only an Asian IP, but being produced by an Asian-AMERICAN owned production company, with multiple Asian-AMERICAN producers.

I emphasize American, because the fact they are both Asian and American means they would be much more acutely aware of the issues Asian people face living in the west than people in Asia. A Japanese suit for Warner Bros Japan won’t know the issues here as much as say, Death Note producer Masi Oka, an Asian American actor who has openly spoken about the difficulty of Asian Americans finding roles in Hollywood.

And there are Asian actors in Death Note - Watari is played by Paul Nakauchi, and a quick look at IMDB shows there’s a handful of other Asian actors. As much as I want? No. But they’re there, getting hired.

I’m not saying “leave Death Note alone!” I think people have every right to be suspicious and disappointed. But it’s also important to consider that it’s immensely difficult for Asian stories be told in Hollywood period, and the fact that Asian American producers are directly involved already is a big step up from adaptations that have come before. It makes me think that the intentions of this movie comes from a place of wanting to bridge the cultural divide between Japan/Asia and the west (something Masi Oka has stated in more general terms that he wants to do) and baby step into Asian roles and creatives having more influence in Hollywood. It’s less “white people wanna make money off Asian stories” and more “Asian American creatives struggling to get Asian stories heard and making the best movie despite all the challenges and factors involved.”

Lucio

How often I use him: My main, my man, my frog revolutionary! Stats show 20 hours on quickplay and 17 hours total in comp. Lucio is the character I started with and the one which I’m still most reliable; him, D.Va and Zenyatta are the only characters I’m comfortable playing in comp. 

Which maps I like to use him on: Everything, but particularly escort maps on attack (Lucio can boost the payload forward), and Ilios (lots of edges to boop people off)

What skin I currently have him on: just the default, pretty sure. I really wish Lucio had more and better skins. :(

Who I ship him with: Genji! It’s a rare pair, but I do love the green boys with each other. I like it partially because of the few but awesome pieces of fancontent out there. I also find Genji’s voice very charming, and Genji has a playful personality that matches Lucio’s. I wish they had interacting voice lines! I enjoy Lucio’s friendship with D.Va, as well.

A couple ppl from my old MMA place have been pretty disappointing on Facebook following the election (Trump supporters, etc) but one of my former instructors pleasantly surprised me with his Facebook feed, which was full of articles about DAPL in support of protest and against Trump. In his profile he also was wearing a shirt that said "Indigenous Strike Back" in Star Wars font. That was just nice to see.
