The Hunter, the Myth and the Cure is the second novella that takes place on Valaria, one of my fantasy worlds.

Ten years ago, no one feared the night. No one feared the full moon or what it entailed. Until the unthinkable happened. Suddenly the moon turned a deep, blood-red color. The first few hours, most thought nothing of it. A strange eclipse, most assumed.

And then the monsters attacked.

Fearsome creatures half man and half beast, they fought with a hunger and ferocity that had no match. No one knew where they came from. No one knew how they came to be.

They just knew what they saw: the monsters were dangerous. The monsters were hungry. And anyone who was bitten very quickly became one of them.

Ten years later, the lycanthropy plague, as it came to be called, still runs rampant. But a new breed of hunters and trackers has risen to meet them, curbing the spread by killing the infected quickly and efficiently. Draven, son of Cozen, is one of the best, often tracking his marks alone deep into the thicket known as the Fells.

It is on one such expedition when, going after a lycanthrope that attacked a small village in the dead of winter, he finds something strange.

Or rather... someone.

Octavian de Silv looks like an elf. He moves like an elf. He speaks the elven tongue fluently.

But he is not an elf. Not truly.

Octavian is a skinwalker, the spirit and form of an elf fused together with that of a silver wolf. For years before the outbreak, he worked as a messenger, running important letters from the elven lands to the Draigo, a secretive humanoid species.

But one day, when carrying such important news, he was attacked and forced to betray the Draigo, the only people who accepted him. He escaped into the wilderness, ashamed. But he was pursued. He thought he was going to die. He welcomed death.

But death did not come.

Instead, he awoke in an icy lake, the surface frozen over nigh moments after he fell in (so he believed). He emerged from the broken ice into a world forever changed, when he had been preserved.

Draven doesn't know what to make of him. But he would be a poor lycanthrope hunter if he wasn't curious by nature. They exchange information, work together to find the lycanthrope he is after, and part as allies, each fully expecting never to see the other again.

But a chance letter from a nobleman draws them back together soon after.

In an abandoned manor deep in the Fells, thirteen-year-old Reese is trapped. Held hostage as leverage against her father, Zade Takari, diplomat to the elven lands. Her captors don't treat her poorly, per se, but when she refuses to eat, they do what they must to keep her alive.

Until a man in a black doctor's coat comes and has her dragged from her room and steals her blood. She is left alive, still, but weakened, her perception of her purpose here shattered. A guard shows pity. He is the key to escape. But she can't go without her father....

The Hunter, the Myth and the Cure is a story about desperation. About guilt. About forgiveness and survival. About fostering and sheltering. About the lengths someone can go to stay alive.

And, yeah, about me trying to fit as much trauma in three characters as possible.

btw I love how you write grian's relationship with alcohol in esos...it's so complicated and it feels so realistic...like I just want to grab him by the shoulders and shake him

any recommendations for getting into The Outsiders? should I read the book? try and find the musical? is there a movie to watch? I started listening to the audiobook but I was wondering if you had any advice on where to start. Thanks!

omg hi thank you for asking this question!! i would definitely start with the book, it’s the original source material and my favorite version of the story. i actually read the book and listened to the audiobook simultaneously in my 6th grade language arts class. i remember not liking the audiobook narrator, but it’s been 14 years since i listened to it. THEN i would recommend watching the movie BUT make sure you watch the “complete novel” version, it’s the director’s cut and contains so many more scenes that make the movie so much better than the theatrical version, which cuts out some vital parts from the book imo. i have a link to the movie if you need it! be warned my link has no subtitles and sometimes there is loud surf rock music that covers up the dialogue a bit (that’s not an issue with my link specifically, the sound mixing is just kind of terrible unfortunately). the movie’s a bit campy but the casting is nearly perfect, the cinematography is gorgeous, and it is very faithful to the book. as for the musical, i am ideologically against bootleg recordings, so as difficult as it is i would recommend getting a ticket to see the show either on broadway or on tour. but i know that’s not feasible for a lot of people, in which case i would recommend either listening to the cast recording or watching official performances of parts of the musical on youtube (tony awards, macy’s parade, today show, gma, etc). but if you find a bootleg, i am not stopping you from watching it lol. i just know going into the musical blind on the third row of the jacobs theatre was life-changing for me (i mean it’s the reason my hyperfixation started in the first place)
