Hello hello! My name is Kate, and I'm your friendly neighborhood fantasy writer.
About Me: I am a female Catholic writer, artist, musician and bookworm who is over the age of 18. This is a writing and whump blog, mostly original works with the occasional fanfic thrown in there for variety. This blog is mostly sfw aside from swearing and posted/reblogged violence.
I love love LOVE writing fantasy, but I am also obsessed with whump (hurt/comfort, heavy on the hurt). And if you didn't notice, I like dragons and that's a big part of why I love fantasy. Also if you send me an ask I will answer in either ten seconds or six business months.
Writing requests are open!
Note: I am strongly and openly anti-ai "art" and "writing", pro-life, Christian Catholic and I wear my opinions on my sleeve. You cannot change this. My ask box is open, but blatant hate, threats and scam asks will be deleted.

#my writing -> all of my writing. all of it. there's a lot.
#my reposted memes, #my memes -> all my memes. They are also on my Pinterest, hence why I refer to some of them as reposted.
#my random thoughts -> random thoughts about anything and everything
All my irl friends on Insta who see the art I post once in a blue moon probably have a very skewed idea of the WIPs I prioritize. There is more character art of Jas and Killian (and a few random memes) than from any of my other WIPs.
Whereas on Tumblr I post insane amounts of writing in Tales from Valaria
I found this book online via its author, my very lovely mutual on main @thethistlegirlwrites
In short, I found it a wonderful and riveting read!
I loved how vivid and dare I say visceral the description of the harsh climate of Rime is. I read this book in mid-summer and it felt at times like I was really there in the freezing cold winter.
The characters!! I love Rory and Emmett so so much I was rooting for them the entire time
The magic system is so cool I adore the concept of a magical meteor dare I say polluting the city and changing everything around it.
The way Rory's powers work is also really interesting, not to mention Emmett's!
Whump rating 8/10 đ
Spoilers below the cut
The entire epilogue - both parts - is everything to me!! If I wasn't reading it in public would've been giggling and kicking my feet. As much as Rory denies it she is as attached to Carlo as he is to her
Also that final line of dialogue between Aurora and Emmett!! Peak. Phenomenal.
I donât know who needs to hear this but itâs okay for writing to be a HOBBY that you do because you enjoy, and that you donât want to do when youâre not enjoying it. No oneâs up in the business of knitters telling them they have to be willing to SUFFER and SWEAT or theyâll NEVER FINISH THAT SWEATER and they canât expect good things to come to them. I donât know why our current culture around writing is so intense, but Iâm here to support your casual, relaxing writing habit. If people can glue pompoms together or knit a scarf or watch hours of streaming shows with their spare time thereâs absolutely no reason writers canât waste time writing just for pleasure, without any expectation that theyâre going to Achieve something Amazing and Important or make a bunch of money or whatever.
I stand corrected: According to a great many who have piped up in the comments, apparently people ARE up in the business of knitters. What the hell. Get out of the business of knitters, people. May we all enjoy our hobbies without pressure to professionalize.
I made bone broth from scratch but what they don't tell you about bone broth is that you end up with like ten quarts of broth in a million mason jars for less than ten bucks and now you live like a monkey with a bone broth shaped hammer thinking "this dish could really benefit from bone broth" for the fifth time in a week
7quart crockpot (if using a smaller crockpot then also reduce amount of bones)
2lbs Bones (I used two large beef soup bones and threw in a couple oxtail bones for beef bone broth but you can use literally any animal bone. Bonus points for using leftover bones from a meal like rotisserie chicken or Thanksgiving Turkey)
3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (this is KEY as itâs what extracts the marrow from inside the bone and makes the broth rich and nutrient dense)
Salt
Enough water to cover the bones.
Literally thats all you technically need but I highly recommend also adding additional flavor in the form of:
Aromatic: scraps of onion, onion peels, crushed garlic, shallot scraps
Veggies: celery scraps, carrot scraps
Spices: black pepper, thyme, rosemary, oregano, etc
For Pho specific broth I used: Lemon grass, stick of cinnamon, star anise, ginger and onion scraps
Pretty much the skyâs the limit with extra flavoring but you can also make it very plain to keep it versatile. For me my plain bone broth I season with only salt, pepper, onion and garlic
All you need to do is throw everything into a crock pot and cook on low for 12-24 hours. When itâs done, use a fine mesh strainer to strain the broth into jars and store in the fridge.
All the fat from the broth will rise to the top and harden into solid Lard. You can pull it out once itâs hardened for fat free bone broth and save the lard for cooking, or optionally you can leave it for full fat bone broth (useful for soups like Pho)
Congratulations you now have liquid gold bone broth, one of the most nutrient dense, rich broths you could make!

A lot of people genuinely believe that permanent disability isn't a thing that happens to good people who work hard and make responsible choices. A lot of people genuinely think that we get the life we work for and deserve. And this is definitely part of the explanation for why ableism is so prevalent
I think itâs odd how many canonically religious characters are head canoned with religious trauma. I understand people like to project onto their favorites, but sometimes I canât help but think, âcan someone please let this character be held by their faith instead of harmed by it for once?â
With it being holiday season I wanna remind everyone that the Christian commandment of honouring your mother and father does not and never has meant forcing yourself to interact with and play nice with abusers or people who harm your mental health.
The commandment is not about that, its about loving your parents.
Also
Ireland was never colonized by Rome and was Catholic before the Anglo-Normans or anyone else invaded. Catholicsm is a fundamental part of Irish culture and identity. You lack basic knowledge of this subject.
What never seems to get mentioned or acknowledged in these gottchas (of either the 'Bible bad' or 'I can do whatever I want to my kids' varieties) is that the nextâliterally the very next verse (Ephesians 6:4)âis "Parents, do not provoke [parorgizete: anger/degrade/demean/push the buttons of] your children, but bring them up in the discipline [paideia: training, correction, education] and instruction [nouthesia: verbal instruction/warning/admonition/encouragement] of the Lord."
The issue is not that scripture promotes or permits abuse and neglect, it's that abusive parents who try to justify themselves using religion see a big flashing "DON'T ABUSE YOUR KIDS, ASSHOLE" sign attached to the bit about children loving their parents and go
please please give us your thoughts on fantasy religion! (Inspired by this post of yours on Queen's Thief)
loooooove this ask.
Iâve never tried to come up with an exhaustive list before, but it seems like most fantasy religions fall under a few basic categories:
Bland Polytheism. disguises itself as fun world-building but nothing about the invented religion has any effect on the plot or on any of the charactersâ deepest beliefs. the whole thing is just the thinnest possible excuse to use âgodsâ and âdamnâ as profanities. some stuff I hate here (Game of Thrones) and some stuff I like (Assassinâs Apprentice)
Catholicism with Mormonism Underneath. irrationality, power dynamics, and âtraditionâ hiding under the smells, bells, and visible hierarchy of Catholicism. (from what I remember, Pratchettâs Monstrous Regiment falls here.)
Catholicism with Aztec Child Sacrifice Underneath. see above, except with worse outrages. (a whole slew of Doctor Who episodes fit here lol)
Catholicism with Materialism Underneath. oh so the gods we pray to were actually just regular people who were especially powerful magic users, and all magic users are actually just scientists? should we throw a party? should we invite Richard Dawkins? (Grishaverse)
Boring-Ass Modern Liberal Polytheistic Patronage. think D&D. a strong vibe of Religion is A Free Association of People Like a Social Club, You Choose Your Gods And All Are Equally Valid. especially boring-ass because faith is typically used as a tool to get the individual power to do what they want to do. (the Vox Machina show falls here; I canât speak to the podcast)
in all these cases, the writer is using religion as a way to talk about human storiesâstuff thatâs wholly on the horizontal level, doesnât touch on transcendence at all. maybe youâre literally just using your made-up religion as punctuation, as in the case of âoh my godsâ. maybe your intricately described religious hierarchy is a way to explore the abuse of power (as there can obviously be in real religions!). maybe the whole point of talking about your made-up religion is to say âbehind this thing I believed in there is nothing but humans vying for powerâ. but thereâs nothing in these stories thatâs specific to religion. and thatâs probably not objectively bad, but it is boring and lazy to me!! give me characters who have genuine faith! give me gods who break into the narrative! give me miracles! give me the tension between freedom and Providence, suffering and trust! if this religion was real, what would it mean?? what would it be like to live in that world???
there are only a few books that do something interesting with their fantasy religion. two in particular come to mind as truly outstanding examples:
The Queenâs Thief, by Megan Whalen Turner. from QoA onward, one of the strongest themes is how suffering and freedom fits into the divine plan. how do you have faith in a god who chooses you but also allows you to undergo tragedy? what does it mean to serve a god who has their own plan? what happens to your ordinary life when you discover the gods are very, very real?
The Curse of Chalion, by Lois McMaster Bujold. like TQT, thereâs a moment where the wholly horizontal plot is broken into, the vertical dimension is revealed, and everything changes. the gods being real makes a difference.
edit to add: The Witness for the Dead, by Katherine Addison! what does vocation mean? can you answer the Call beyond what you feel worthy of?
Princess of the Midnight Ball gets a shout-out for having Plain Olâ Literal Catholicism, including an interdict plot point. Spinning Silver gets a shout-out for the âif Iâm going to marry an ice fey king he darn well better respect my Jewish traditionsâ bit. City of Brass is fantasy Islam instead of fantasy paganism or Catholicism, but I canât speak to anything in that book other than Dara, whom I hated and despised.
and as a Silm-ignoramus I probably shouldnât speak on religion in Tolkien at all. but my understanding is he sort of neatly sidesteps the weirdness of sub-creating a religion by having his characters be so long-lived that the creation of the world is a point of memory, not faith. that allows him to kinda stay on the horizontal level for LOTR without exactly neglecting or minimizing the transcendent.
Can someone help me understand the whole influx of Christo-Paganism? Like - it specifically says that we shall have no other gods but God Himself? Also! As someone who was pagan before God rescued me, I really do not understand how one can do these mental gymnastics - as youâre celebrating two different things? Itâs two different traditions and way of worship. Youâre one foot in the grave, practically. Please take all this as good faith.
Can't decide which I prefer -- delirious whumpees who ramble about a new thing every ten seconds because their mind is wandering relentlessly, or delirious whumpees who become fixated on one subject that they insist is important (and very likely is Not)
