On Button Mash
This is a name that might not be familiar with most Wastelanders. If you visit the new Baltimare hospital, there is a statue of a young Earth Pony colt in a propeller beanie, a video game controller in hoof, staring up in awe of a young stallion in a trilby with the same controller. This is Button Mash.
For those that don't know, Button was a Ponyvillean, a video game obsessive, and when he was young kind of a rambunctious but...um...dorky?...child. He was also Sweetie Belle's first love.
He and Sweetie started dating when they were 10 years old, and were always the cutest little couple you could imagine. They were together for 6 years, but eventually broke it off. Sweetie Belle started to focus on getting her singing career off the ground, while Button still seemed content to try to hold onto his childhood a little longer. This maturity gap made it so they couldn't remain lovers anymore. They continued to stay close friends though.
The war, of course, changed everything. At the outset, they tried to hook up again, but it was doomed to fail. They lasted all of 9 months, but the friction started to grow again. This time it was for opposite reasons though. Button had a sudden maturity spurt, and enlisted in the military, while Sweetie was trying to recapture an innocence that even that early she could feel slipping from her grasp. So again, they broke it off while vowing to remain friends.
And that's what they stayed until his dying day.
Button served 2 tours of duty as a tank commander deep in Zebra lands, before being discharged with an injury. His tank was ambushed with an IED, and Button lost one of his legs.
After he returned from the war, he became a professional video game designer. This would be his last job, and he became very successful at it. Along the way, he also became one of the first recipients of a cybernetic limb.
From what I've been able to gather, when it was clear to Stable-tec that things were not looking good, and they came up with the Stables, Sweetie forced Scootaloo to make sure that Button had an available slot for any and all Stables. He never made it to one though. He was attending a game developer's convention in Baltimare on the day the bombs fell. Baltimare's early warning system was directly tied to Fillydelphia's, so when Fillydelphia fell, Baltimare was left more or less defenseless. Its Stable...only 150 souls made it to that Stable, most of them government employees that had connections to Manehattan and Canterlot, and their families. Button was not one of those employees, and the bomb that hit Baltimare struck within three square miles of the hotel this convention was being held in. There wouldn't even be remains of him anymore. He would have been vaporized more or less instantaneously.
Button was one of the strangest ponies I have ever known. But in the end, he proved himself to be one of the most distinguished, both as a soldier and as a businesspony. And since he's largely dropped out of history, I thought somepony had to remember him and make ponies aware of his legacy again.
((don't you just love cross-fandom stuff? :p))
