Tonight, I'm reminded of an episode of the 2000 version of the Twilight Zone, called Button, Button. In it, a couple are faced with a moral dilemma-- a box containing a button is presented to them, and they are told that, if they press the button, someone they don't know will die, but the couple receives $200,000; being financially burdened, they press the button, and it's moved on to somebody they don't know.

Tonight, America has proved that they would press this button for a cold 4-piece McNuggets.

In  return  for  which  you  will receive a  payment of $50,000.’ Norma stared at the small  man.  He  was smiling.”
