sera looks down to the broken christmas ornament with sad eyes. it was formerly a snowflake that hung from the window, but when the string broke and it fell to the floor, a piece snapped off. she crouches at her thighs and picks up the broken pieces, holding them carefully in her palm with her fingers curling over to secure the pieces so that none of them would get lost.
“ unnie, do you think we can fix it? “ she asks, getting to her feet and turning with an open palm to show the older girl the broken piece. it’s difficult for sera to get into the holiday spirit this year, because her family isn’t together anymore and she won’t spend the day with her sister. so in trying to cheer herself up, she was helping the other decorate and it was all going well until the ornament broke.
maybe sera was just emotional lately, but when she looks to the broken pieces that once were whole, it reminds her of herself and how she’s so fragile lately. how easily she could fall apart if the right words were spoken to her or if she revisited the darker corners of her mind.
