BWxD is Great but...
From Sep 25th to 27th, accompanied by Anthony Guido, Mike Begley and Lixin Kang, I participated in Better World by Design (BWxD), a conference organized by students in Brown University and RISD. There’s absolutely no doubt that BWxD is a super worth-attending conference as it brings in abundant sources of topics around what social design can and should do in terms of solving problems for the society and making the world better. I sincerely appreciate this opportunity to receive opinions, experiences and methodologies shared from people working or studying in so many different aspect of human life. Nevertheless, there are, in my opinion, details in which BWxD can look for perfections.
The presenters in BWxD did a very good job bringing up different types people in the society who are in great need of help and are being not paid attention to. Most of the presenters, as I recognized, are also devoting unbelievably strong enthusiasm into the work of helping these people who need help. What made the conference so heartening is that it shares sympathies to people in difficulties, implying that something in the world isn’t working in the way it’s supposed to, addressing the disappointment as a problem and announcing that we’re solving the problem.
It’s a human nature to bring up an evil, fight with it and defeat it, while there’s no evil in real life. There are only people who are not awared of their responsibilities and abilities to solve a problem as we expect them to, and people who are awared of those but are resisted by fears in their way to the solution. Ethical Ideals are always beautiful to all humanitarians, but social designers need to understand the problems more systematically solve it a more practicably.
Blue Lobsters and Aristotle: Introducing Deb Mills-Scofield
Long-time friend of Better World, social media superstar, and “groundbreaking systems engineer turned consultant/venture capitalist/ teacher” Deb Mills-Scofield will be joining us once again at this year’s conference! Her work seems to span entire disciplines and her awesomeness seems to know no bounds.
We had the opportunity to ask Deb a few questions in the lead-up to our time together this September.
What's your square one and how do you build from there?
