REALLY pissed off on getting into a four-year college. >:(
Ok so after I finally graduated from my two-year college (Bronx Community College), I was hoping I wouldn't have any major issues getting into a four-year college in the future. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.
This whole thing started way back in August 2010 when I was going to apply for the Spring 2011 semester (I couldn't apply for Fall 2010 because I heard that the number of transfers applying was full). I wasn't sure exactly where to go at the time, so I spoke to a counselor to help me out. I told her about my GPA, the classes I took, the grades I got, and the scores I got on the entrance exams. And even though I was worried, she said that I had a chance of going to a four-year college and not just the one I DON'T want.
See, when I was almost finished with graduation, I received a letter from the New York City College of Technology, saying that they would like me as a student there or something. It wasn't an acceptance letter, no. It was like saying, "Hey! We think you have good grades and since you're almost finished graduating, we think it's best if you continue studying Graphic Design over here at City Tech." At least to me that's what it's like.
The reason why I didn't wanna go is for two reasons: #1, I live in the Bronx and the college is located in Brooklyn (though it only takes 1 train to get there at least where I live, it takes quite a while to get there). #2, a classmate of mine at BCC told me she knows a friend that hates City Tech and finds it very frustrating.
So anyway, back to the counselor. After I told her everything, she said that there were only two CUNY senior colleges closest to me that have Graphic Design majors: City College of New York (Manhattan) and New York City College of Technology (Brooklyn). I told her I wasn't sure about City Tech, but she still recommended me that I should not apply to transfer for just one college if I wanna continue taking classes in the Spring. And since City Tech was the only OTHER college close to my home that had a Graphic Design major, I reluctantly chose that one as well.
What she didn't tell me was all the different math regulations the CUNY colleges had. For example, City Tech, like BCC, has a requirement of 30 or higher on both Math exams to enter the college. City College, however, has requires a 45 or higher on both exams to enter. And it does not matter what major you're studying. I got a 30 in Math1 and 33 in Math2. On top of that, I didn't get a good enough passing grade in my 3-credit Math course at BCC. I only got a D+ (And yes, D+ is a passing grade, but it's barely passing and you can't get too many of them if you want to graduate. Fortunately, that was the only D I had). Now just because my Math was below average, doesn't mean I did bad in everything else. In my English, History, and Environmental Science classes, I did really well, and in my Art/Graphic Design classes, my grades were VERY high and I enjoyed those classes the most. It's just my Math skills that require improvement.
After I had apply to transfer and everything, I kept waiting and waiting for MONTHS and I kept calling and they didn't say anything. I was really worried.
By the END OF NOVEMBER, I finally got answers. I called CUNY and they said that I only got accepted into City Tech. Later on I got their acceptance letter. I was very disappointed.
So I called City College to find out why I didn't get accepted. And the reason why is because both my Math entrance exams were below 45, like I said earlier.
So the next day, I went to BCC and asked the person at the Math Lab if I could possibly take the Math Compass exam for the fourth time. He said no. He said that by BCC standards, once I get 30 or higher, I pass and I cannot take the exam anymore. Not only that, he also said that based on the regulations at the BCC Math Department, if I wanted to go to City College, I would need to take a specific Math course, which is Math 23: Probability and Statistics....which I didn't take (the Math class I took was Math 12). I can't take it now because I already graduated.
And that was when I knew that I was screwed big time. Had I not known about this earlier before I graduated, I would've taken that class and I wouldn't be in this situation.
So then comes Career and Transfer Day at BCC in December. I went there to talk to representatives of both City College and City Tech, starting with the City College representative. I explained him the situation I'm in and he said that if I took Math 23 and got a C or higher, I might be accepted into City College. But I can't do that because I already graduated. So I told him that I only got accepted into City Tech, but I don't wanna go to City Tech.
That's when I spoke to the City Tech representative. I explained her the situation I'm in and she said that I could take a Math course there and get a C or higher so I can go to City College. After that, I thought about where to go.
So I called City College again explaining more details about my situation and now they said that I have to take a Math course and get a C or higher. They also checked my SAT Math scores and they don't seem to help either. I got a 450 in Math and I need a 510 at least and I took the SAT way back in 2005 when I was still in High School. They also said that another way I could get in is taking a Non-Degree Math course there and if I get a C or higher, I'd be able to transfer.
Later down the line I also learned that I could also take Math 23 at BCC as a Non-Degree class. However, I also learned that these Non-Degree courses cost a lot of money. Non-Degree courses cost around $180-190 PER CREDIT at BCC. They cost around $270-280 per credit at City College. So I had no choice but to take the Math course at City Tech in the Spring.
Now I was hoping this would be easy because all I had to do was sign the Financial Aid papers, register and that's it. But this was when things got MUCH worse.
First off, I'm sure all of you reading right now that the end of December 2010-January 2011 had SO MANY SNOW DAYS. It was especially a huge problem for me because that kept pushing back plans to finish everything on time, so it took me longer to finish everything. On top of that, Financial Aid takes 10-14 days to process and that was very difficult with all the snow days. The worst one being on January 27th which was supposed to be the Freshman Convocation day, but was cancelled. Why? FUCKING SNOW!!!! >:( As a result, I couldn't get any update on my Financial Aid.
Second, when I went there for Advisement and Registration, the advisor wasn't very good at helping me. All she did was give me classes and that's it. I explained my situation and she said she doesn't know much about City College and that I can't take the Compass exam there either because my scores are passing by their standards.
Another problem I had was the TAP. They wouldn't pay my Math course because I was taking only 4 credits. As a result, only PELL is able to pay for it and it's only $694, which is less than the cost of the Math course ($820). On top of that, my book voucher didn't arrive yet and as a result, I couldn't the homework that was due in the first week.
So that's the situation I'm in right now. After that, I had to call CUNY and City College AGAIN. I explained to them both that my situation is getting much much worse and they told me an alternative that I didn't know: I can get accepted into City College by taking the SAT again. If I get at least 510 on the SAT Math, then I'd might have a chance at getting accepted. Otherwise, I would have to continue taking the Math course at City Tech. I chose the former.
So yeah, there is LITTLE hope for me, but that doesn't change the fact that I was REALLY pissed off at how the schools put me in this horrible situation. It's things like these that are starting to make me dislike college and I don't want that to happen because I really enjoyed the Art and Graphic Design courses at BCC and I want to continue studying in the Graphic Design major, but issues like my Math are really getting in the way of that. I wish I didn't have to go through this situation.
Below average Math skills may have gotten me here, but I think the poor advisement I got did a lot more damage.
So hopefully I'll pass the SAT and be able to get in. Wish me luck.
