“Norman is an utter delight. Incredibly auspicious, comparatively bright in several regards. Certainly of the sort I take to, naturally. We fancy each other quite well!
Although, I’ve yet to see him across from myself in the arena. Perhaps, then, I’d have a bit more clearance on his character, his intent. Hopefully this situation can be remedied soon enough.”
The clear Sinnoh sky is studded with gleaming stars, a soothing breeze levels the perfect nighttime temperature--and at this moment, sitting alone on the balcony of the Jubilife Condominium penthouse, Clair wants to be anywhere else.
Inside the lavish meeting space, Gym Leaders from all over the Pokemon world are mingling happily--exclusive invitees to Sinnoh Champion Cynthia’s annual Pokemon League summit. Previously, Clair had no trouble declining the yearly invitation, but this year she decided to finally bite the bullet and make the cross-regional trip. In the days leading up to the event, the Blackthorn recluse even found herself looking forward to the occasion--perhaps she would run into Iris, Drayden, or even Cynthia herself? The prospect of gaining new dragon knowledge from her peers was admittedly very exciting...and then Clair lost her first Gym battle in two years.
Perhaps she was distracted, but the crushed Leader ultimately made no excuses for her poor performance. While she had gotten better at dealing with defeat over the years, losses happened so rarely that Clair forgot about their soul-crunching impact on her mood. For a person so dedicated to training and preparation, defeat was simply unacceptable. Somehow, the distraught Dragon Tamer still took off for Jubilife the next morning--she had made a promise to attend this the event time, after all.
Once Clair arrived at the summit, however, her mood took a steeper nosedive. She was polite enough to everyone, even partaking in a few sips of wine to alleviate her shame, but eventually all conversations turned to achievements, a topic that the normally-prideful Clair couldn’t handle in the wake of her loss.
So here she is now, swishing the remnants of her drink morosely in its glass, her cape drawn around her like a dark blanket. Tipsy peals of laughter ring from inside the penthouse, and Clair is grateful that she’s outside for the time being, free to collect herself in peac-
Suddenly, the balcony’s glass door slides open and shut, a new presence quietly making itself known within Clair’s crafted territory. The Blackthorn Gym Leader takes a sip of wine and rolls her eyes, and when she speaks next, her voice is snarky--her bad mood clearly evident in her clipped tone. She doesn’t even give her unknown visitor the courtesy of eye contact, opting instead to fix her narrowed gaze on the starry horizon.
Do you have any arcs planned out or already in the works for your blog? Name one of your favorite tropes. What has influenced your writing and blog?
[ For Roxanne in particular, I’ve always wanted to cement her as something more within the lore of the Pokemon universe; first Gym Leaders (aside from anime Brock) are usually relegated to the back-burner of memory, and rarely amount to much more than simply serving as that first obstacle. Roxanne deserves a few noteworthy arcs, to at least establish character, such as a scientific breakthrough or unprecedented discovery. Both are ideas I’m bouncing back and forth with, trying to find little ways here and there to incorporate. She’s one of the most brilliant minds in the multiverse, and deserves to be regarded as such!
A fun trope that I’d see working well with Roxanne’s character would be the ‘Mulder vs. Scully/believer vs. skeptic’ trope, herself able to be either, depending on the situation’s context. ‘Opposites attract’, as well, simply because of how rigid she is.
For the blog aspect, I really envisioned it to appear like a scientific journal, and yet I couldn’t find a decent enough theme. There were going to be notations left and right, physiology of several species of Pokemon, a ‘field journal’ complete with ‘snapshots’, the works. It all will be accomplished, I believe! Roxanne is someone I love so, so much, and can see myself developing for a long time to come. ]
ovo for Norman and Roxanne as well as Dawn and Antonio perhaps?
Norman, of all the Gym Leaders in Hoenn besides Brawly for other reasons that shant be discussed, is Roxanne’s favorite, and perhaps the only of the bunch she truly looks up too. She admires his family life and the way that he conducts himself, and she’s learned quite a few things from him that she’s applied into becoming a better Gym Leader. And, although she won’t care to divulge deeper into it, he reminds her of her late father, a renowned Veteran trainer. All in all, she hopes to further their friendship!
