"My safety isn't important! You're what matters!" And it was true, they already lost Shiro, another loss is not something they can afford right now. Keith holds the status as the Black Paladin, their leader, and it was her job to protect him. He had people to go back to, a beloved to find, her own are gone and she's accepted it. Yuki's sword quickly drops to the ground, stretching out to a barrier to block the shots. "Go, Keith! It won't hold for long!"
DANGEROUS LOYALTY | CLOSED
❝ N-no, I can’t- I…! ❞
Keith’s head shook frantically, wide eyes shifting from Yuki to what could be their inevitable doom and back again. IT WAS JUST THEM and just them wasn’t enough to stop this force. The team had been split up and it was time to regroup and Keith knew he couldn’t do that without splitting the fire.
Though what he SHOULD do wasn’t quite aligning with what he WANTED to do. Deep down Keith knew better than anyone that sacrifices needed to be made sometimes for the greater good. He couldn’t let something like emotion cloud his judgement because in order to save the most people possible his decisions had to be based on logic and reason.
Logic dictated he should take what time Yuki could buy him.
Emotion dictated that HE WAS SCARED and didn’t want to lose anyone else who was important to him, and so soon after he’d lost Shiro.
Eyes pressed shut tightly, fingers digging up and into his eyes to rub at them under his helmet. He took deep breaths in succession, IN AND OUT, and by the time he’d looked up again a tick later he nodded in understanding.
Every muscle in his body felt heavy and LEADEN and his throat and eyes burned but he’d nodded and gotten up to go, unwilling to cast a glance back over his shoulder at what he was leaving behind. HE COULDN’T DO IT because if he did then he’d turn back and they’d both be doomed which meant that VOLTRON WOULD BE DOOMED and he couldn’t do that to the universe.
After all, the universe was more important than his own happiness.
HE KNEW THAT.
