You expect a neat database with census records. There is no database. There is one census. Half of it is destroyed.
Everyone is named Jānis or Mārtiņš or Anna. Everyone. Fathers and sons and grandsons have the same name. Their spouses and mothers have the same name. You realize your girlfriend has the same name. You sigh.
You have heard of Russian cursive. You've heard of the German Gothic script. You weren't prepared for them both in the same document. But the words are in Latvian.
The Russian Imperial scribe who wrote the census report about your family doesn't know the difference between 24 and 42. Suddenly your ancestor had to be born to a 9 year old. That is what the paper says. You spend an hour trying to understand.
You visit the relative's gravestone in a tiny cemetery in the middle of Latgale. There isn't a house in sight. The birth date on the on it is wrong by several years. You spend another hour doing maths.
You spend three hours looking at church books from the 1800 that were scanned 20 years ago trying to find a single page. You buy eye drops and live off of coffee. Your social life is in the same state as the contents of your ancestor’s coffins.
You have a common last name. You give up before you start. The 10K of Bērziņi that aren't related to you do the same.
You suddenly wish your family were German emigrants to USA. You'd at least find them.
Your family legends crumble. Your grandparents don't want to believe evidence. You feel lied to. You’re not included in their will.

Identity and logo-design for Conscious Labs, a french tech startup working on EEG hardware.
The möbius strip
The logo design is based on the topological shape called a Möbius strip. It’s a surface in 3D that only has one side and one boundary.
It’s an object of wonder, one can contemplate for hours.
The strip will retain its unique topological properties even when displaying extreme contortions.
A living shape for a living entity
The Möbius is a constant in motion. The logoform can express a wide range of feelings using the twisting of its shape and the variations of its colors.
