Well even Barthes’ essay doesn’t say disregard the author, he just says that the author isn’t the end of meaning in a text. Authorial intent is only part of a large web of sources of meaning
Right. I just feel like a lot of people see Death of The Author and just think that means they can disregard whatever they want.
For example in Hardboiled or Dirty Harry you can read the characters as having PTSD but it's still very clear they're unambiguously supposed to be heroes that solve problems by shooting them.
