bryrosea replied to your post “Dramatically slams door with a little extra oomph to show how MAD I...”
Ooh...ouch. Is everyone okay, at least?
Everything's fine! It's the glass for an old aluminum screen door going into my garage. So it's a simple case of having a new rectangle cut and having it screwed back into place.
It's my own fault. I was doing the passive-aggressive mom thing where I was acting angrier than I actually was so that the kid would remember the DRAMA and stop doing the thing.
In my defense, we were already 8 minutes late getting out the door when my kid spilled his 90-day prescription all over the floor. After I've told him a million times to open pill bottles over the counter. And god forbid I handle his meds without a 6-point hand sanitation inspection. Freaking germophobes.
From bryrosea . Came in as a Fan Mail, so I'm pasting it into a text post.
For the fic writing meme, from Sometimes: “Duncan washed his hair, using a shampoo that didn’t smell like much of anything, except for baking soda. He had recently switched to a line of certified organic products. The stuff barely lathered, but made up for it by being Paraben-free and a great topical source of phytonutrients. The discussion-slash-argument with Veronica last night had been his first attempt at reconciliation. Their friendship still might not get back to where they were before they dated, but he should be able to be in the same room as her without breaking into hives now. He’d never realized she’d harbored such hostility towards him, but couldn’t say he blamed her. No wonder the drive to the Gold Coast for the Bodie Chang article had been so awkward.” Sorry to Donut your inbox, but I’m endlessly fascinated with your characterization of Duncan.

Oh...Donut.
I decided at the beginning that if I'm going to be stuck dragging DK across the country, I was at least going to make him breathe. To exist beyond flat dialogue and a vacant stare.
Since he has very few character traits in canon, I figured he was a blank slate I could do whatever I wanted with. And I actually like the character he's turned into.
My Duncan is a mess.
He's repressed. He's in complete denial over what's happening between L/V, and his own feelings towards them.
Consciously, he's still invested in the idea of being Prince Charming. Especially now. Sure, he blacked out and killed a guy, but at least he still eats organic, recycles, and avoids styrofoam. He's spent the night in a nice, wholesome town, met a nice, wholesome girl, and considered staying behind to live a nice wholesome life.
But the meds are gone now, and new aspects of his personality are coming out. There are his little rebellions against his parents - drawing/sketching (waste of time for a future president), diving off a tire swing into a country pond (but there could be parasites!), eating a juicy burger and letting the juices dribble onto his chin. And maybe he's having a little too much fun making up ridiculous cover stories. And maybe, despite his Madonna/Whore complex, he's a little less repelled by the darker and seedier aspects of life than he'll admit to himself. The transformation will continue throughout the story.
I enjoy writing this character. My Duncan > Canon Duncan. I do dread the scenes where the reveals start coming out. I've made some people actually like this Duncan, and I don't want to ruin that with the rape reveal - (he's needed through the end of the story). On the other hand, I don't want to sanitize the situation either.
Dilemmas...
