“So long as you try, even if you make a mistake, you have not failed.” He placed a hand on his son’s shoulder. “I know how hard you work at this, Lu Ten, as you do at everything. Whatever your uncle says or thinks, I’m proud of you.”

Lu Ten’s stomach still complained in anxiety, but he reached up and squeezed his father’s hand at his shoulder. Iroh’s words sat warm in the middle of his chest, growing outward, despite Lu Ten’s pervasive shame. 

“Thanks dad...” He turned, slipping his reedy arms around him. At twelve, he’d finally had his first growth spurt, but it had only served to make him a little taller, and his arms still did not quite fit around his dad’s middle. 

“Will you...help me work on the katas? I want to do better next time...” Perhaps it was too much to ask of the crown prince, but Lu Ten always preferred to train with him over any of his tutors.

“It’s alright, Lu, you didn’t know,” he assured his son with a sad smile as he gently brushed the hair from her face. His smile grew a bit when he felt her just barely squeeze his hand and noticed her reach for their son’s hand.

“I called while they were running tests. Your cousins are asleep. Ursa says she might bring them to visit tomorrow if things go well; says she’s praying for us . Your uncle and grandfather may be by in a little while.“

He didn’t want to contend with his uncle just now, but it wasn’t something that he thought he could voice to his father. Besides...his mother had reached for him.

Lu Ten leaned over the breadth of the bed, taking her hand in his own, bringing her knuckles to his lips for a kiss. He buried his face in the hospital blanket next to her thigh, hiding the tears of anxiety that slipped passed his eyelashes while he still clutched at her fingers.

“That will be very kind of grandfather,” he said into the bedding after taking a moment to compose himself as much as he could. His voice was muffled. Despite his best efforts, his voice sounded thin in his ears, and it cracked.

The Fire Lord didn’t just leave the palace on personal business.

My muse hasn’t been heard from all day. Send me your muse’s reaction to being the one to find them.

He straightened slightly at his son’s voice, lifting his head from his hands. “I am sorry for worrying you, my son,” he murmured sincerely. “I went out for  some time and did not wish to be interrupted.”

He had told the servants as such, though that had been meant more in respectful regard to his father and brother. He knew now that he should have allowed Lu Ten to be the exception to that, had the servants tell his son where he went so he would not worry.

Heart calming now that he knew his father was safe at home, Lu Ten crouched next to Iroh’s chair. 

“Where did you go?” He raised his eyebrows, curious. He had rarely known his father to so completely disappear. He had always been reachable before. Mother’s death had taken a strange toll on the older man. 

Lu Ten worried that he wasn’t recovering from it.
