I actually loved the new ATLA show and there is no possitivity in the tag whatsoever so I'm stating my piece. It was not a line-by-line remake but it was it's own thing, still keeping the core messages and feelings of the OG show. Sure, there's always the discussion of remaking something from animation to live-action as cash-grabs, but I think we're beyond that by now. If you despise the very concept itself, why submit yourself to the ordeal of watching something you know you can't enjoy? and give Netflix the ratings while you're at it. The kids casting is absolutely amazing, the character archs through the season were a bit wonky but worked fine overall, the scenery was beautiful, the balance between humor and serious moments was perfect, some of the additions enriched the characterizations (Like Zuko's diary!), it was good! and it will even draw a new generation of watchers to the OG show.

Mostly, what makes me sad about all the negativity, is that a big-budget show with an indigenous woman as one of the leads is not something that happens often. I almost never does, actually. The 'House of the Dragon's of the industry will continue to thrive, making PoCs cannon fodder, while we nitpick and and hate-watch what was in my opinion a beautiful kids fantasy show made with care and genuine admiration of a beloved story.

In short, I just really want Kiawentiio to stay employed and succesful lol. I'm just an indigenous woman rooting for positive representation. There is much room for improvement on the writers behalf, especially concerning the "Tell don't show" moments, and the way in which they brushed over the hardest parts of Katara's personality. But for any improvement to happen we need to voice our concerns in constructive ways.
