I’d love to see a Drabble w Daphne :0
Drabble 2 - Daphne (Hope you Enjoy :D):
There is a tradition from her birth clan that young foals would be lead out by their parents to find a large piece of bark from a dying tree. After retrieving a chunk and returning home, the piece of bark was left near the fowl’s sleeping quarters. Her elder had told them that the first dream they had, and remembered, was a vision of their future and that they had to capture it by carving into the bark with what they could feel from that vision. Only by marking it down will they have cemented their own destiny.
Daphne’s not sure if the bark is still in her old den or if her birth clan has burnt it in the wake of her treachery and disappearance. It has been several years since then. It was doubtful that it still existed.
She did not dream of this life; kneeling in a garden with stringed baubles overhead and the soft sound of clucking chickens behind her. A life filled with what once was an enemy, a monster, told to her when she was younger. A monster that she has found to be soft and beautiful; framed by the purple tapestry that curls around her chin and flows down her chest like a waterfall. A monster unbidden by any rules placed upon them, surviving and living with a contentment that she had not realized she pinned for until she suddenly found herself adopted by this new clan. Dragons. A word that she used to hear spat out in disgust and distrust. A word that spurred the rationalization to do onto which the propaganda proposed dragons already did. The actions to which lead her to Ultra, to the opportunity to learn more, and the permanent removal of herself from which she has grown to know.
Carefully, she stands and moves around the garden, looking down at the small green stems of what will become potential vegetables and fruit. She walks to the back of the house, where the mushroom garden grows, and checks on its development.
She can’t remember what she did carve all those years ago.
There is a quiet solace in staying behind when the dragons travel out to visit family in the plaguelands. A privacy that permits a weakness that she would otherwise never show. A tender wound that has yet to heal, the understanding that she cannot yet accept, that manifests through the tremble of her hands as she wonders, not for the first time, if she’s lost her destiny in the pursuit of knowledge. There is no nostalgia for the actions she has committed in the past, but she misses her parents and her sister. She wishes she could talk to them and explain her actions. She sometimes dreams that they understand her decisions in life, yet she does not carve those dreams down.
In the silence of her new home, she finishes her tasks and heads back in. Knowing that it will be another week before Ultra and the others return. She has time to mourn and she has time to dream. Daphne puts the mushrooms in a bowl and places it in the fridge. She cleans her hands and heads to the room she shares with Ultra. She finds a book that had been leant to her and heads back to the living room to curl around the layers of sheets and pillows and bury her thoughts in draconic text.
