WHO: @devhawthcrne
WHERE: Devrim’s Loft, Downtown
In the time since she’d gotten home, Maddie had had quite a few heart to hearts with her sister. She’d apologized more times than she could count for pulling the disappearing act of the century while promising she’d do her best to ensure what happened out in the woods of Bighorn Hills never happened again, she’d also learned of all that had been done to try and bring her home. And while she’d been surprised by the turnout, she was more surprised to hear that her ex husband had not only gone out with the search parties himself, but he’d made himself available to her family and he’d watched Ellie while Beth tended to their parents. Even after everything she’d done to him, after everything she’d put him through, Devrim still went out of his way to help the woman who’d ripped his future away from him without visible hesitation and that couldn’t go unacknowledged.
She’d debated on sending a card or a fruit basket to thank him, anything not to repeat the awkward encounter they’d had in the coffee shop after Halloween; but Maddie had a lot of time to think while out on that ledge and even though she tried to avoid thoughts of him and their marriage, she’d failed at keeping him out of her head. He’d deserved more from her then and he deserved even more from her now, so even though it was going to be awkward and uncomfortable, it was time that Maddie stepped up and at least tried. Even if she didn’t have all of the answers it was the least she could do.
So after getting his address from Beth she’d stopped by the market to get Kevin’s favorite treats and a bottle of liquor she remembered being one of Dev’s favorites before making her way to the loft. It’d taken her longer than she’d anticipated getting up the stairs, the canvass tote bag on her shoulder serving as a physical reminder of where she was headed each time it bumped against her side while she made slow strides on the crutches. She’d spent about fifteen minutes standing in front of the unfamiliar door, talking herself into knocking as fear flooded her senses and caused a lump to form in the middle of her throat. Finally she gathered the courage to knock once, then twice, holding her breath as she listened for footsteps on the other side. There was a large part of her that hoped he wasn’t home as she began counting out a minute in Mississippi's in her head- telling herself if he didn’t answer by the time she got to sixty she could leave. She’d gotten to 45 Mississippi when the doorknob turned and her eyes widened, dark pupils taking over most of the blue in her irises as her fight or flight response kicked in and everything inside of her screamed at her to run. But by then it was too late, the door had opened and there he stood and as their eyes locked Maddie suddenly lost her voice.
“Hi.” She was finally able to force out after a few agonizing seconds of silence. “Can we talk? I have booze.”
