Hells. It had all happened too quickly - too quickly for him to intervene, too quickly for him to stop it, too quickly to grasp what was happening until it was too damn late.
Gareth scanned the area quickly, making sure no threats were incoming, and ran over to Ithaca, cursing under his breath. He sheathed his sword and fell to his knees, gingerly lifting her head and pulling her into his arms. “Just a minute, right?” he said under his breath, trying to keep composed as he cradled her close to his chest out of instinct - she was safer that way, safer from anyone who dared show their faces. “Just a minute, we can get you some help, just hold on a minute.”
He was a guard. Apparently a terrible one, for no good guard would have let this happen. But a guard nonetheless.
And a guard who knew just how much time a person had before their injuries were fatal.
A guard who knew that there would be no chance of help arriving in time.
He pushed the thought from his mind, focusing on staunching the blood with his sleeve, which he had torn from his tunic.
