"Jamison...it's been a long time." Marcus began with a deep sigh. He hated making calls like this. Once upon a time, what seemed forever ago, he served alongside Jamison and Jacob and the others. When the others retired and went to do their own thing, Marcus remained in service. Becoming an old barking dog that tried his best to whip the new pups into proper shape. When he saw the McGarrett boys...he knew they would go far. Be just as their father and their grandfathers. He became rather fond of both of them. When they were shipped out, he kept his tabs. Which is why he was calling now. He wished he could do this in person and yet, he was where he needed to be. And that was acting guardian until the rest of his family heard and could come here themselves.
"I wish I were calling for different reasons...for better reasons. I debated heavily as to who to call. But since I'm here and this is something better done face to face, I hope I'm not asking too much of you by asking you to deliver this bit of news." He paused, because even if things looked optimistic in some regards...it was still a bit bleak.
"Jack got caught in a blast on his last op." He paused again, waiting for Jamison's reaction to happen and pass enough for him to continue, "Medics got to him on time and he was flown to friendly territory to be properly treated. Since then he's been transferred again to a hospital in Langley. It's been about...two weeks, nearing three really. Details of the op needed to be settled so we weren't able to reach out sooner. Chances are, I'll still get an earful for telling you this but his family has the right to know. He was far away enough that it didn't kill him...the doctor's are hopeful of a recovery. But...there is some spinal damage. They're not willing to comment yet if he'll...if his legs will work like before...."
Initially Jamison had just been expecting a social call when Marcus’ name had popped up on his caller ID. All it took was hearing the tone of his first few words to know that wasn’t going to be the case. Listening to Marcus speak, he felt his heart drop, already thinking of how he was going to tell Steve and Andie.
“Sweet mother Mary,” Jamison breathed, sitting down hard on his couch as he rubbed his face with his hand. “Thank you for telling me, it’s going to be better if they hear it from someone they know rather than just a phone call. I just hope the higher ups aren’t stupid enough to try and keep Steve and Andie from visiting, cause they’ll regret that pretty quick.”
Hearing that Jack had spinal damage effecting his legs took Jamison back to another similar conversation. He remembered how hard Andie had to work to get back on her feet and she’d done it barely into her teen years. This was probably going to just as devastating for him as it had for his mom when she went through it.
“Well, whether he makes a full recovery or if he continues to have struggles, we have his six and if you can, make sure to tell him his Ohana has his six. Thank you again, I’ll pass this on to his parents asap.”
