[Practice for the new band had lasted about twenty minutes before Cass decided she needed to go out onto the balcony and have a cigarette. It's not that they weren't clicking -- they were. The guitarist was really good and the bassist wasn't as bad as his idiot attitude let on that he would be. So it was fine. It was good. Except she was the blonde drummer replacing the blonde drummer and even though they obviously hadn't been out on a search for that or anything, it was just weird.
Meeting new people and working on intimate projects like music is weird.
And maybe it would have been better if Cass were better with people in general. If she liked meeting new people and making new friends. Only this was like a weird group with some toxic codependency issues and she could hear it from the way they all talk about each other and how the girls from across the hall had sat in on her audition and were coming in and out of the apartment the last few days like they all just shared the floor of the building or something.
She's new. She's awkward. And not in the spilling things and tripping over her words kind of awkward. Just in the not from East Jesus Nowhere, Texas, hasn't fucked three people in the building, and doesn't know anyone's middle name awkward. She's playing the drums and sneaking out for a cigarette while the bassist and guitarist pretend they aren't pissed at each other about something.
It's weird. It's weird and there's someone on the balcony already -- one of the girls from the audition. She smiles politely and lights up, half hoping for conversation to break the tension, and half hoping that no one ever talks to her ever. She breaks the ice anyway, out of habit.] You're uh, friends with the band, yeah?
