From the moment Lorna woke up, she knew something was wrong. Her entire balance was thrown off, because for as long as she could remember she had been able to feel the magnetic fields of the Earth around her. Even before she’d gained control of her powers, she couldn’t remember a time when those invisible pulls weren’t something she could feel, like a sixth sense. The only time she’d ever not felt it? When there was a power suppressing collar around her neck.
Her hands flew to her neck, but there was nothing there. No reason she should feel like this. Tentatively, she reached her hand out, concentrating on the lamp by her bed. Nothing. No movement, no green glow, nothing. Just a growing feeling of dread and fear creeping up on her. Something was wrong. The texts she received from Ric did nothing to alleviate that concern.
Things only got worse when she headed out to the street. Almost immediately, she was greeted with Enforcers fighting--Alex? No, he only just got out of the Raft. This couldn’t be happening. As she blinked, moved closer, who the Enforcers fought seemed to change, but Lorna didn’t notice. Every time, it was someone she loved fighting for their life. Worse, Lorna watched as a bullet flew through the air, directly at him. Instinctively, she threw out a hand to stop it. But nothing happened. As if in slow motion, she watched Alex fall. Like watching Scott die all over again.
She didn’t notice that the Enforcers seemed to disappear as she reached him. What she did see was the other bodies. Scott, Jean, Erik, Kara, Ric, more. Her family, her friends, all struck down or arrested and she was powerless to do anything. It was like her breath was stolen from her lungs, like a knife was driven deep into her chest. “No... No, please.”
