365 DAYS. That’s how long SHOULD have passed, how much TIME has gone by. 365 days he has SAT here, in Patsy’s Pies and watched the same people order the same meal over and over again. His birthday had come and gone, Christmas and Haloween too but no one in the world noticed. Every day he woke up was the same one over and over again. Tuesday, May 22. He has been stuck in an endless cycle of TUESDAY MAY 22. He went through all the stages, taken all the steps. First, there was PANIC, denial, fear. Gradually this changed when he figured out what was happening. It led him to research everything he could, using the internet, reading endless books. Once that bored him he began to DRINK. First a little, and then a lot. He started talking to himself, going a little crazy. He spent his days doing things he could never get away with, stealing and other petty crimes. It didn’t matter because every time he fell asleep it was like hitting the RESET button.
He had started to journal, keeping track of every day. He had found that if his journal was on his person when he fell asleep, or beside him in his bed, whatever he had written the previous night STAYED in the ink. It was the only thing not washed away with the beginning of the same day. He didn’t know the purpose of this, why he was alone here living like this. Maybe he died, and now he was in hell. It wouldn’t be a shock, he had done many things to deserve ending up in HELL.
Fingers overlap each other, elbows on the countertop. He was so used to sitting in the booth at the back of the restaurant, in the left corner. It was where he had sat on the REAL May 22. He had come in for cherry pie and coffee and now he was stuck in a time loop. On that very day, he had witnessed Sierra, one of the waitresses, spill hot coffee and two entire plates of food all over herself and the customer who knocked her off kilter. He had watched the accident happen time and time again after that. His blue eyes always flicking over moments before it happens, preparing for it. Today would be different, he needed today to be different. Something had to change, something compelled him to sit at the counter. He was going to HELP, make a change, even if it was just minimal.
It would be any minute now, his body reacting effortlessly as he hears the gasp of the girl. A hand shoots out to grab the tray before it can hit the ground, his hand hitting the hand of another who had moved to do the same. Coffee shakes in the mug that Brayden’s hand closes around. Sierra is talking but he isn’t listening. Icy blue has connected to WARM green and eye contact is maintained for a moment. HE WAS NEW.
Hair as red as fire, stare as bewildered as his own. He can’t find any words, the diner moving around the two of them as it always did. Sierra has pushed away to deliver the almost spilled food. Brayden had missed if she had actually thanked them or not. All he could focus on was HIM. All he could think about was how he had never seen him before. How he knew EVERYTHING that happened on this day from every possible angle, and here was something he had never seen before. 365 days stuck with nothing unique, and now here it was.
