“Maddie, shhh..” Clarke’s voice is a tiny whisper, she feels the girl’s body press against her own. Usually, Maddie was so ready to fight, so ready to learn and jump into action but they had been short on sleep the previous night, and Clarke needed to find them something to eat. Maddie was an excellent shot, but the girl's abilities weren’t as good when she was hungry and exhausted. Clarke’s entire perspective had been changed, her decisions now affected Maddie every step of the way. So they were taking a small break, behind a tree. Clarke had pulled them back here because she could have sworn she’d heard something. Pale fingers close around her hidden weapon, her ears pricking, listening for anything.
She had radioed Bellamy earlier in the day like she had every day without fail. She felt like it was time to lose hope, to move on, to give it a rest, but she couldn’t Something inside of her wouldn’t allow herself to not try, to not listen for him, to hear his voice come through the little box and fill her with nothing but relief. She wanted to know he was okay, that all of them were okay. He wouldn’t have given up on her, and she wasn’t about to give up on him. She’d seen the rocket take off, they had to of made it, all of them. She wouldn’t accept anything less as the truth.
Maddie’s eyes widen and Clarke holds a finger to her lips as she strains to hear. VOICES. But there is no way that’s right because the only voice that Clarke has heard in five years was Maddie’s and that was after a year on her own when she had heard no one when there had been nothing. She thought she was the last person on earth, she’d heard nothing from the bunker. She gives Maddie a small look, when the girl nods Clarke knows its understood she isn’t to move. Slowly drawing her sword she inches out from behind the tree, towards the sound. She was armed and ready, she wasn’t about to leave Maddie on her own, but she hadn’t seen or heard people in so long she wasn’t going to go in swinging.
Her sword falls from her hand and all the air leaves her body. She chokes, unable to move like she just got punched in the gut so hard she was winded. She blinks more than once, digs her nails into her hand so hard that she knows blood has been drawn, does everything she can to make sure this isn’t just a trick her mind was playing on her. Her brain had played a lot of tricks on her, especially when she had been alone. She had seen him, others too, but mostly just him. He always had so much to say.Â
She waits until she’s sure until she sees him see her and then she takes off towards him, running full speed because she’s in disbelief because if this is a trick its a damn good one because she has to know because she called EVERY DAY.Â
