Traverse City Turn, Part Three

In the final post of the series on the TC Turn, we see that the train has dropped the center-beam cars at the former Pere Marquette passenger station and is now shoving an empty gondola over to Beacon Recycling on the southwest side of town.

The diminutive train, traveling on former Chicago & West Michigan, and later the Pere Marquette, is seen here crossing over the Boardman River.

Traverse City Turn, Part One

Here’s a series of posts with the Great Lakes Central TC Turn. This first trio of images has the train on its way back from the lumber yard in Bates with a couple of empty center-beam cars.

That’s Grand Traverse Bay, East Arm in the background; we’re looking down Bunker HIll Road—in Acme, Michigan. The rail line is the former Chicago & West Michigan/Pere Marquette.

Main Line

This ROW (right-of-way), in Traverse City, Michigan, once supported the main line of the Chicago & West Michigan, the Pere Marquette Railway, and the C&O after that. Today it is operated by the Great Lakes Central. With wild fires out west, this was one of the more smoky days, with a distinctive smell, reminiscent of sage.

Traverse City Turn, Part Two

Continuing a series of posts of the TC Turn, we now see the train passing by a decommissioned Coast Guard jet on the east side of Traverse City. The plane is an HU-25 Guardian, which was manufactured by Dassault, a French company; these planes were phased out by the Coast Guard in 2014.

Traverse City takes pride in calling itself a Coast Guard City: their Jayhawk helicopters can be seen over town nearly every day.

Pere Marquette

Here is some former roadbed of the Chicago and West Michigan/Pere Marquette/C&O south of Traverse City, Michigan.

The location is the exempt road crossing at a place once known as Beitner; I gather we are 163 miles from Grand Rapids.
