A New Look for the GLC

At the time this image was made, this was a new look for the GLC. Also since then, more recently, the small road has been acquired by Watco.

In any case, this is I wrote for a caption when the photo was made...

Great Lakes Central Railroad unveiled a new paint scheme for its locomotives—here we see it applied to a recent acquisition: six-axle locomotive number 382. This unit is 48 years old [now 56]; it was built as an EMD SD40 in 1970 as Penn Central number 6262.

The locomotive, hauling but one or two cars of scrap, is seen crossing over the Boardman River in Traverse City, Michigan. The Grand Traverse County Courthouse is visible in the background [since obscured by a new building]; the rail line is the former Pere Marquette.

Traverse City Turn, Part One

Our diminutive train was in town once again today. I was running errands when I heard it, so popped over to Franklin Street, ran down the tracks a ways (with iPhone in hand), and bagged it crossing the Boardman River Bridge.

While the Great Lakes Central uses the tracks of several former railroads (such as Ann Arbor and the Pennsylvania), it is plying the rails of the Pere Marquette (later C&O) at this location.

Given where the light engines are, I assume they dropped some empties at Beacon Recycling.

Traverse City Turn, Part Two

After the train got moving again (see previous post), I trotted after it and bagged two more shots going away. It seems as if the substantial whistle post of the Pere Marquette has been tagged in the colors of the Great Lakes Central.

The light engines proceeded to go east of town on the line, nearly to Williamsburg, to service the lumber yard there—picking up empties I imagine. It will soon return to TC and head back up the former Grand Rapids & Indiana (later Pennsylvania) branch line to Walton Junction and on to Cadillac on the main.

Interlude: the Boardman River Bridge

My little train actually came to a halt right after the previous post, and so I was able to make this study of the bridge itself. The clouds today, of course, are the real star.

Once again, this is the former Pere Marquette (later Chesapeake & Ohio) crossing the Boardman River in Traverse City, Michigan. This portion of the mostly abandoned line is being utilized by the Great Lakes Central for two customers in the area.

Boardman River Bridge on the Pere Marquette

This is the Great Lakes Central Traverse City Turn. The train is shoving an empty gondola over to Beacon Recycling on the southwest side of its namesake town.

The diminutive train, traveling on former Chicago & West Michigan, and later the Pere Marquette, and later yet the C&O, is seen here crossing over the Boardman River in Traverse City itself.

Traverse City Turn, Part Three

In the final post of the series on the TC Turn, we see that the train has dropped the center-beam cars at the former Pere Marquette passenger station and is now shoving an empty gondola over to Beacon Recycling on the southwest side of town.

Traverse City Turn—A New angle on the Boardman Bridge

This is another sequence of the Great Lakes Central’s TC Turn—in this post, the train has come back from the west side and is seen crossing over the Boardman River Bridge.

This is on the former Pere Marquette which went up western Michigan, through Traverse City here, and on up to Petoskey.

Crossing the Boardman River

Light power crossing over the Boardman River in Traverse City, Michigan. The units are headed for Beacon Recycling make a pick up. This line is now operated by the Great Lakes Central, but was formerly the Pere Marquette Railway and later the Chesapeake & Ohio.
