Me *finishes helping a customer find a book*: Anything else I can help you with?
Customer: Nope! What was your name?
Customer: Hmm. *looks at my name tag and back up to face* You mean like Samantha?
Me: Well, that’s my legal name, but I like to go by Sam.
Customer: I don’t like Sam. It’s too masculine for a girl. I like Samantha. It’s whimsical and light and pretty.
Me: Well, I do prefer to go by Sam.
Customer: Hmm. Well, have a good day Samantha.
*fifteen minutes later at the checkout line, I am covering a break for a co-worker, the customer from above gets to my register and doesn’t recognize me*
Customer: What’s your name?
Me: *looks him dead in the eye* My name is Sam.
Customer: Oh, you helped me earlier. And you mean Samantha.
Customer: Hmm. Well, bye.
