Using Shakespeare to Calm New Mothers (Or : That Time My English Class Obsession Showed)
A friend of mine was VERY pregnant and had recently discovered she might need to have a C-section instead of vaginal birth. She was freaking out about the scars and the procedure and everything involved (you know, normal first time mother stress) and everyone was trying to calm her down. Saying things like, "I had a C-section, it's not so bad!" "The scarring isn't so obvious," and "My staples came out, but they fixed me right back up no problem!"
I was the one that jumped into the conversation and added, "Plus your kid can do what I do when talking about being a C-section baby and quote Macbeth! 'DESPAIR THY CHARM, AND LET THE ANGEL WHOM THOU HAST STILL SERVED TELL THEE, ANNA WAS FROM HER MOTHER'S WOMB UNTIMELY RIPPED!'"
Because nothing makes a kid feel more badass than screaming Shakespeare quotes, right?
Shout out to the C-section babies, your mother loves you too. She just wanted to maintain her hips. Or it was an emergency and she had to do it...to maintain her hips.
