Der Morgen, um 1860 (The morning, around 1860)
The morning is depicted as a bearded man sitting on a rock with an alphorn in his left hand, the upper edge of which is hit by the first rays of the rising sun. Behind the man stands a Capricorn on the rock. Below the man, the night has rested.
Der Mittag, um 1860 (The noon, around 1860)
The noon is depicted as a mermaid with blonde hair, standing in the water and looking at her reflection. A fish swims towards them.
Der Abend, um 1860 (The evening, around 1860)
The evening is depicted as a landscape with trees in the twilight. The rising moon shines through cloud strips. Above the clouds, the only dimly depicted day has rested.
Der Nacht, um 1860 (The night, around 1860)
The night is depicted as a woman with waving robes. She is accompanied by two putti. The left one with a wreath of flowers is an allegory of sleep, the right one with an extinguished torch is one of death.
The collector Adolf Friedrich von Schack acquired the picture cycle of Schwind in 1865 for his collection.
