      the captain rakes his eyes over the other ,    who’s laying sort of half on - half off the sofa .     he’d been in the room most of the time that fitzjames was sleeping ,    and only because he knew one of the others would try and pull some sort of prank on him if they found him there ,    unattended .     𝗗𝗘𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗘𝗟𝗬 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗢𝗡𝗟𝗬 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡 .   he raises a brow and adjusts the way his pointer stick is settled under this shoulder .

      a quick glance at the clock on the mantle behind him tells him just how long it’s been .    oh ,   well ,    it’s been longer than he thought it was .     𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘 𝗙𝗟𝗜𝗘𝗦 𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗡 𝗬𝗢𝗨'𝗥𝗘 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗙𝗨𝗡 ,   𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗬 𝗦𝗔𝗬 .          ❛   three and a quarter hours .   ❜

       ❛   has he ?   good things ,    i should hope .   ❜   the captain shifts his weight ,   fixing his stance as he looks over the other man .    the one that can come and go however he should please ,    an individual of some standard ,    but ...   a sailor .    he hums as though he’s thinking ,   his gaze narrowing just a tad .

      regardless ,   he offers a hand forth to shake .    ❛    knowing thomas i should very much doubt it was the height of compliments .    ❜

      if he weren’t dead and capable of real physical change ,   his face would be bright red .    a ridiculous sort of shade .    he stammers .    what is he supposed to say to that ?    where is he supposed to begin with that ?    he’s looking anywhere but at chief right now ,    his eyes on the floor ,    on the figurines on the mantlepiece ,    a chair ,   a rug .     𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗦 𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗢𝗔𝗧 .    his finger loops around his collar ,   tugging ,   like it’s suffocating him .

        ❛    i--   i--   well ,    i don’t rightly know .     love is ...    it’s a very difficult thing to define ,   isn’t it ?     but i do think when you know ,   you ...   know ?    ❜
