County: Derbyshire District: Peak City: Unknown Village: Wizarding Location: Somewhere between Chesterfield-Matlock-Baslow Accent: Derby
Derbyshire Country is located in the Northen Middle of England, or ‘smacked dab between it’all” and filled with rolling hills, cragged hills and patches for forestland. Derbyshire has been home to the Hawkins Clan for many generations, all of her family barring her Mother who was born near Bristol has the same rolling Derby tongue.
Penny natural accent is a thick Derby accent, broad of the tongue that still uses variants of words like thee and thou. Her accent is pronounced in her speech, though as multiple years have gone on at Hogwarts she’s learned to hide its distinctive pattern as well as much of her slang and idioms. She found that if she learned to speak with a softer accent, then she’d get better notice and more respect than her normal speech pattern and has learned to speak differently, though when she gets fired up, emotional or even very relaxed she’ll slip into it once more. Though recently she’s taken to using it more and more, though it’s not on purpose and more subconscious use. This may be due to her more firey & rebellious changes in her personality and world view. As such she may now revert to using some of the more common idioms & slang of Derby.
Some of the most common slang or idioms one might hear Penny say should she slip up from her practiced tongue would be:
NUFF SAID–I understand you don’t have to tell me anymore THA’ WHAT– “What did you say” jokingly or a threatening. HEYUP– a greeting FAIR TO MIDDLIN’– “Not too bad” THA’LL GET NO CHANGE OUTER THAT ONE– You won’t get anywhere with this person. GERRON WI THEE– Get on with you–You must be joking EY-UP ME DUCK– Hello my friend or loved one. THA’S MUCKED IT UP– You have really made a mess off that GOBSMACKED– Surprised BOLD AS BRASS– A very forward person COMMON AS MUCK– Common as dirt, someone of low reputation. TWERNT– It was not. TIS– It is TISNT–It is not MIND THYSEN– Please move out of the way
One really good example of a Derby Accent can be found here (x) or here (x). Both are from Jack O’Connell, actor from SKINS Gen 2 // Unbroken // ‘71.
