Finding time in his schedule to make a dent in the intimidating pile that is his homework is a constant challenge for Seongwoo. He can’t get any work done on campus because the bustle of collegiate life is far too distracting. If there isn’t a pep rally for a game going on in the quad, there’s a protest or a fundraising event happening instead. The student union is a constant ruckus of noise. On the other hand, the university library is too quiet, so silent that the sound of a page turning draws glares from the students seated nearby. He can’t get much studying done at home either.

He discovered this coffee shop by chance during a study group session. It has enough patrons to maintain a dull din of background conversation, but it’s quiet enough that Seongwoo can concentrate on his homework without losing his place in his readings every few minutes. The proximity to an espresso machine is a welcome bonus.

Today the crowd is a little larger than usual, but it still doesn’t interfere with Seongwoo’s homework. He pops his earbuds in and is able to knock out his econ and business ethics assignments in a half-hour. After that, he’s able to shift his full attention to his microbiology textbook, and before he knows it his americano has gone ice cold.

He makes the unfortunate realization only after taking a large drink from his mug.

Sputtering, Seongwoo sets his chilled coffee aside in favor of reaching for a napkin to wipe his lips, carefully dabbing at a stray drop or two that landed on the pages of his textbook.

Sana should have known to turn around and leave the coffee shop the moment that she spotted the scowling barista at the counter. Cafes were challenging enough for her on the best of days. Factoring in a foul tempered barista almost ensured that this venture would turn into a disaster. Even if the line was short and the lobby largely empty, there were still so many ways that this could go wrong.

But she didn’t have much of a choice today, did she? She’d been sent on a coffee run by a few of the beat cops when they caught her on her way out to lunch. If she returned empty-handed, Sana would never hear the end of it from the older men. Though they weren’t quite as egotistical as some of the senior detectives, the beat cops possessed awful inferiority complexes that seemed to drive them to create a scene over the smallest slight.

With a sigh, she shuffled forward in the queue, frowning at the sticky note held carefully between her fingers. She was pretty sure that the officer that wrote down the orders had intentionally done so in an illegible scrawl in hopes that she would mess one of them up. There was no way that the chicken scratch writing would be acceptable on an official report.

She was so distracted by her attempts to decipher her superior’s handwriting that she failed to notice the queue moving forward or that it was her turn to place an order.

“Is that what you want to hear?” 

Jongsuk’s grin causes the split in his lip to tear anew. He can taste the fresh blood on the tip of his tongue as it stains his teeth. He looks absolutely feral where he sits bound to the chair, his dark eyes tracking Shadow’s every move as the other man paces restlessly before him. 

“You want me to apologize for what I did to your little boyfriend?” he continues, cocking his head to the side as he leans forward as far as his bindings will allow. The rope binding his wrists digs into already raw flesh where Jongsuk has been subtly testing his bindings since he came to a while ago. It’s impossible to tell exactly how long it’s been since he woke, but he’d hazard a guess that it’s been a couple of hours, easy. 

He doesn’t miss the way that his captor’s eyes narrow at the taunt, and it draws a low laugh from Jongsuk. 

He settles back against the chair, making a show of making himself comfortable where he sits, as if it were a throne and not an old, rickety chair. 

“He’s alive, isn’t he? Frankly, you should be thanking me for returning your boy with all his fingers and toes.” He watches Shadow through his bangs, delighting in the rage that Jongsuk can see boiling to the surface, and so he can’t help but press a little further, push his luck. “He’s quite the screamer though, isn’t he?”

He’s almost a little annoyed that he’s having to give a gift to a target ( because that’s what Seongwoo is first and foremost, after all ) but any irritation fades away as the cold air creeps into his clothes while he’s shopping because no matter who the recipient, Wonwoo loves Christmas shopping. He loves everything to do with the holiday besides the ridiculously long queues, actually. He thought that would be reasonably obvious from the marginally bigger smile on his face for the duration of December and the obscene amount of decorations at the cafe but apparently it still surprises people to learn he’s not a scrooge. He wonders if Seongwoo thinks the same, but he doesn’t really give him time to make it known, dropping the perfectly wrapped gift box down onto his table as he studies, muttering a hot, “don’t say anything and don’t you fucking dare open it until Christmas Day. Merry Christmas,” and marching back to the counter, avoiding eye contact as he serves an arriving customer.

Seongwoo is so surprised by the gesture that he doesn’t manage a response before Wonwoo makes his stormy exit back to the coffee counter. His eyes flit up to follow his friend’s retreat, but fall back to the package neatly wrapped and placed on the only spot on the tiny table clear of his anatomy notes and flash cards. His lips pull into a slow smile before he dutifully turns his attention elsewhere, acting as if the exchange never took place per Wonwoo’s warning. 

When Christmas Day finally arrives, Seongwoo is too busy to enjoy it. It isn’t until after an emergency meeting with the AEGIS board members leaves him dragging himself home after three in the morning that Seongwoo finds the time to open the gift. When he does, his expression lights up, smile wide and beaming as he carefully inspects the notebook, taking his time to admire its cover. The pens were a welcome sight as well– no matter how many he bought, Seongwoo never seemed to have any on hand once he set down to study. 

Despite the late hour, he fishes his phone out of his suit pocket and quickly types out a text for the other man to find when wakes in the morning.
