Phobos History and Timeline Headcanons

I love this show, but I felt its timeline and continuity considering Phobos and his history was all over the place. So I wrote this timeline headcanon to hopefully piece some things together.

This is cartoon-verse, but there are some elements from the comics that could have been adapted if the show continued.

Part 1: Youth

⦁ Prince Phobos was born to Queen Wiera and the royal consort Zayden after years of trying for a child. The Escanors have long suffered from infertility, so the prince was a welcomed blessing in their eyes. There was only one drawback, Phobos was a boy, thus could not inherit the throne, and had no magic powers. Moreover, he was sickly. Due to inbreeding, infertility and childhood illness were common in the Escanores. However, female children are blessed with a magic core with a built-in healing factor that keeps them healthy. Because their son did not have this ability, the Escanores resorted to using the mystic waters under the castle to heal their son. Pools of energy that drew power directly from the planet, these waters were only to be used sparingly, when a royal is wounded in battle or anything else that could not be healed with their magic.

⦁ Magic system explanation: Magic is energy, and energy needs a source. The guardians giant their magic power from Aurameres, or external cores. Female Escanors have internal cores, making them a neverending generator of energy, their bodies naturally producing it as if it were blood. The men, along with the rest of the meridian populous, are born with nothing unless power is absorbed. Think of it like cellphones, you need to charge them regularly or they cease function. Phobos was borns magic-less, but attained magic by taking from the mystic waters and other magic users. Instead of draining all the power Elyon had at the moment then killing her, Phobos wanted to turn her into a black rose, a living organism, so he could keep harvesting her power. When he took his mother's power, she was drained from recently giving birth, so she didn't have much to offer, and the rest of the family was not as powerful as she, even the planet was running out of power, so he was desperate to gain an endless power source. However, cores can be siphoned into items or people, like the heart of Meridian, and most hearts originate from a living source (Aside from the heart of Kandrakar, which is more of a beacon for Aurameres), acting as an external core.

⦁ Though he lived a privileged childhood, Phobos had his entire life mapped out for him. He was groomed to be the perfect consort, a seed bearer whose only goal was to breed more powerful women. When it was thought his mother was infertile, he was tasked with producing an heir, or in his mind, producing his own replacement. He was engaged to his cousin Vivian, someone whom he despised greatly.The young Prince wanted more than this, he wanted to prove himself as a brilliant politician, diplomat, and sorcerer. To stand as a powerful and revered figure among the Queens and Duchesses. Yes, some of it was rooted in pride, but the Prince had a deep longing to forge his own destiny.

⦁ Under the cover of night, he bathed in the mystic waters, draining their energy and making it his own. Soon, he realized he was able to drain the energy of others, so he started stealing power from his relatives, little by little, as they slept or when he offered to brush their hair, his power started to grow. When his mother found out, she scolded him for it. He snapped back, saying that is the women of his family could produce infinite power, it shouldn't matter if he took some.

Part 2: Travel

⦁ Phobos looked apon his family history, a history of concouring and colonisation. Inspired, he decided to prove his worth as a royal and diplomat by going out and conquering worlds. The first step was to raise an army, so he turned to Lurdens, who were always treated as second-class citizens by Meridian, and falsely promised to return their native grounds to them if they aided them, as well as offering food and other essential recourses, all to manipulate them. He was also joined by other men who thought they had the right to magic, like Johnathan Ludmoore.

⦁ With the aid of Ludmore, the prince crafted the Seal of Phobos, a pendant with the ability to open portals to other worlds. Thus began his conquest

⦁ Phobos traveled from world to world, forging alliances with their inhabitants, setting up colonies and taking recourses. Many acquaintances, hungry for power, joined him on his journey. At some point in his travels, he reached Ophioûkhos, a kingdom of servants. That’s where he met Cedric, a high-ranking general of Typhon and Echidna.

⦁ Cedric’s culture was one of barbarism, but he craved knowledge. From Phobos and his men, he obtained literacy, expanding his intellect far above that of his kind. Wanting more, he joined Phobos as a delegate. With Cedric's considerable strength, Phobos could use his power more sparingly.

⦁ Phobos, preferring the company of men, entered a carnal relationship with Cedric. Having been raised to be celibate until marrying, this relationship came as a welcome relief to the prince.

⦁ With Phobos becoming a menace for multiple worlds, Kandrakar called on the guardians (C.H.Y.K.N) to protect the metaverse. For decades, Phobos and his allies fought against the guardians, growing weaker with each passing year as his magic began to drain. During this time, he had Ludmore create the 12 portals to send obstacles their way. Ultimately, Phobos was temporarily defeated in a battle that left him nearly drained and Ludmore sealed in a book.

Part 3: Conquer

⦁ Narrissas betrayal happened shortly after, Phobo's defeat. Thus, after the current guardians were disbanded, Phobos was free to start over. A little magic was all one needed to absorb more, so he slowly started taking.

⦁ First, he seduced his old fiance, Viviane, who never truly got over him, and drained her of her power, turning her into a black rose, then had one of his shapeshifting court members take her place. They did the same to her father, and apparently, overnight, Viviane and Reginald swore their loyalty to Phobos. Thus began the massacre of the Escanors.

⦁ One by one, his relatives fell and were added to his garden, while shapeshifters took their place. All forfeited their right to the throne, leaving Phobos the only possible heir. However, his mother revealed, to everyone's shock, she was pregnant, and thus, if the child is a girl, the throne shall go to her.

⦁ Initially enrages, Phobos instead chose to bite his time until the child was born. His mother outmatched him, power-wise, so he waited until she was weak, exhausted from the birth of her child, and took her out, absorbing the little power she had left and also doing away with his father, adding them both to his garden. Even though they were ended by his hand, Phobos still wept for his parents.

⦁ Unable to absorb his mother's full strength, Phobos instead planned to keep his baby sister alive until her powers reached their peak. While the roses in his harden gave him a small amount of energy, the circumstances of their defeat severely weakened them, thus Elyon was to be the energy source he could eternally feed on. Needless to say, things did not go as planned.

⦁ After Elyon was taken to Earth, Kandrakar set up a veil between worlds, essentially trapping everyone on Meridian. With no other source of power, Phobos started draining the planet of its power using the mystic pools, waiting for the day his sister would be found.

Kadma ,Yan Lin and Nerissa were the original trio

Kadma and Yan Lin as first generation immigrants could realte the most to each other struggles at school. And while Nerissa had all of traits to be a Queen bee, she found much more interesting to listen Kadma's strong charactered speaches, then to rumor around with other popular girls

Nerissa grew up without father whom she lost during the war . This made her a very strong willed person with a high sense for justice

This was the way all of them came together - by standing up for each other and keeping together to protect

what do you think of the costumes in w.i.t.c.h (and by extension c.h.y.k.n)?

Oh, the W.I.T.C.H. look fantastic. Their analogous color combination is pretty unusual, but it works perfectly, especially because they all have natural hair and eye colors. Even Will's tomato red hair is perfectly balanced thanks to the cool pallet. You have Cornelia who has the longest skirt which enhances her height and makes her look like the most mature and primed of the group; Taranee has her comfy shoes, booty shorts, wristbands and the most practical shirt of the group to convey that she's sporty and active in spite of her glasses showing that she's also the brains of the team; Hay Lin with flat, childish shoes and the most flowing skirt; Will is marked as the leader by virtue of her most distinctly witch-like sleeves and her skirt with the belly-button cut emphasizing her center, and Irma...

Actually, Irma is a bit of a curious case? She conveys her pluck, sass, and spunk mostly through her posture here, but her first outfit doesn't have as much of a "theme" as the others, even if it looks excellent and appropriate to her. She's the Lancer of the group, so what her clothes convey is only clear in contrast to the others. Even though she's one of the shorter and more immature members of the group, she wears heeled boots, unlike Hay Lin. Her skirt is short, but not high-waisted like Will's. She has the same top as Cornelia save for the cut under her boobs, but hers clues as more to the fact that she's the water elemental because Corny's long hair, skirt, and boots take the focus away from the blue of her shirt. It's not until she gets her power up that her ensemble becomes more water-focused with her new cascading hair and wavy, longer skirt.

Which segways us into the powered up outfits, which I appreciate because they look more mature by showing less skin (just to be clear: I don't mean that it's automatically bad if your powered-up magical girls show a bit more skin). They also add the black gloves and, although you can't see it in the picture, the boots turn more practical. Aside from Irma, Hay Lin and Taranee also get more mature hairstyles, with Hay Lin also leaning more into her roots with her new top and hair buns. Cornelia is even more covered now, but I wished they'd given her a turtleneck instead of leaving it with a close neck like that like that, because her shirt covers up to her hands so the exposed neck takes away from the aesthetic. Irma and Will's respective bottom pieces turn more comfy and practical than their previous short, kinda movement-restrictive skirts. I also think it's good that they added their respective symbols, because even if they are fake fantasy scribbles they kinda help ground their roles a bit more, and also they prevent their tops from looking bland now that the solid color takes up more space.

And now let us look into the C.H.Y.K.N! Mind you, I never finished this arc, so most of what I know about these girls is from the wiki! Also! Why would anyone name them that?! Who forced the writer's hand to do that?!

Ah, Nerissa. She doesn't actually have a canon leader outfit in the comic, this is what the tv show gave her, and man is it obvious that no one looked up for any depth in her personality beyond "evil". Yeah, that dress makes no sense as something a fallen hero would wear unless Kandrakaar's Heart really just went to her and said "Yeah, you are Destined To Be Evil". Ngl, I kinda dig how the skirt is cut, and I get that since she was the center of the team she has a cut on her center like Will's, but the whole thing looks to heavy, especially with her Rapunzel hair, even with the short boots. The W.I.T.C.H. always maintain a balance of the mobility in their costumes, even Corny who has the heaviest skirt, but since she is the earth elemental speed isn't really a priority for her. But Nerissa's dress is a one-piece, so no matter how open the skirt is, it drags down the whole thing. What's worse, because the whole thing is purple with no teal to interrupt, not only does it not match the stockings, but it just reinforces how little the tv designers bothered with her. "Uuuuuh, she's the evil one so lets make her entire thing purple because it's the most eeevillll color". It's also weird that she, and by extension her group go back to looking like this in the show because... the W.I.TC.H. are middle schoolers. Admittedly most of them save for Hay Lin maybe could pass for older girls, but Nerissa and her posse don't look nearly as young in the TV show, save for maybe Cassidy.

Kadma down here has a similar problem with her colors. It feels like she mostly has that band to put a teal piece of clothing on her, but it doesn't really balance anything, so it looks like an afterthought that doesn't quite congeal with the rest of the outfit even if I think it's appropriate to the personality I can gleam from her aesthetic. The TV show gave her a choker instead, which looks better with her new neckline, but it also doesn't really solve the issue, even if it was a good idea to make her skirt with two side cuts instead of one like Corny's.

I do like Halinor's outfit, though, especially when she has her other sleeve, as I do think it conveys a personality, but her detailed locks detract from that, so I think the tv show did the right call by giving her a less complicated cut. It's also weird because it feels to me like the locks were drawn this way to make her look femme like Corny, but like... according to the wiki Kadma is the foil to Cornelia in this group, so that seems unnecessary?

Lastly there's Cassidy and, honey, there's innovating and then there's not committing to anything and trying to have your cake and eat it. I get the feeling based on her expression and posture that she was supposed to be the most shy member? And maybe also sort of The Heart? (not the power, the archetype in a five man band)*checks the wiki* Oh, she was killed, that makes sense. Yeah, my point is, she would look better if she just kept her skirt short, and the tv show also has this problem that makes look like center cut of her skirt is below her bellybutton, which, hm, bad idea. Kadma can do that because hers is wider than deeper, but Cassidy's is more like Halinor's, so it only works in something high-rise.

All in all, you can tell by their designs that the C.H.Y.K.N. were not really treated like individual characters that exist beyond their narrative use. Nerissa is just a villain and a foil and everyone else is the latter, which is a shame when you compare them to the care that was put into the W.I.T.C.H.'s designs and how they related to one another.

30 Days of Witchversary- Day 25

This or that: WITCH or CHYKN?

Well of course I prefer w.i.t.c.h. because we have 139 issues with these girls while CHYKN we had two pages. But there’s something so intriguing in a unhappy ending version of what the guardians could be. After seeing Will struggle multiple times with the heart’s weight, it makes us wonder what would happen if the keeper became obsessed with it. So there’s the reason to why I love CHYNK so much as I’ve shown time and time again. Honestly if a reboot someday happens - AS IT SHOULD- I’d give all of my money for like a mini series (kinda like Adventure Time’s Stakes), or at least 2 episodes or A FILM (Imagine!!!) about them so we could really meet the characters, love them, love their relationships, emphatize but all of this while having the anxiety of already knowing how Nerissa ends up... dude what a dream.

So I guess I could say I love WITCH for who they are and their story and relationships and CHYKN for the idea of it

Spare kalinor headcanons ma'am?

MY SAVIOUR!! THANK YOU for giving me an excuse to talk about these two!!!

god where do I even begin... my canon for them is a bit all over the place because i started with only vaguely connected oneshots, and have only recently started working out where the others and their families and the guardian plots fit into it, but i’ll give some off the top of my head:

They’ve liked each other since day one. Kadma already knew she was attracted to girls so she had a sense of these feelings right away, but for Halinor, she had no words. She was just inexplicably drawn to Kadma’s bright eyes, her dry humour, her sharpness and her sarcasm. Wasn’t sure what it meant, but that she reeeeeally wanted to be good friends with her, possibly forever.

Halinor was raised Catholic while Kadma was raised Hindu. The difference in upbringing leads to these two having plenty of theological debates, all in good humour, while the other three guardians watch on in amusement.

They talk sometimes over the telephone, but it’s far more exhilarating for Kadma to lie awake at night and feel Halinor entering her mind, voicing thoughts they can never seem to say out loud (until one day they can and it’s easy and it’s like a weight’s been lifted). They’ll talk each other to sleep, giddy with the knowledge that this is their own private place, to be interrupted by nobody.

Kadma and Halinor are a package deal. Everybody knows this. Their fellow guardians know this, their friends and families and teachers know this. One is rarely seen without the other. Even on guardian missions, they’re far more likely to pair up because they’re just so in sync.

While they think they’re being subtle about their relationship, the others can obviously tell they have some sort of secret. While Nerissa and Yan Lin brush it off as the two of them just being best friends, Cassidy is convinced that they’re secretly smoking weed together and wants in on it. Instead, she stumbles in on them kissing. (And makes some discoveries about herself that very same day, because yes, I’ll accept lesbian!Cassidy as canon, thank you Greg Weisman.) She agrees to keep their secret, but suggests they should consider opening up to the others about it soon.

I love listening to Carole & Tuesday while thinking about kalinor, but especially the song Polly Jean because it’s got this sixties prog-rock sound that I connect with their post-guardian freedoms; healing from the terrible things that happened to them, taking each other by the hand and deciding they’re not going to run away anymore, they’re going to be happy and out and live their best lives, for Cassidy’s sake as much as their own!!

This one is more of a general CHYKN headcanon, but: If I were in charge of a CHYKN reboot I would definitely use kalinor as a narrative foil to nerissidy - while one pair become fractured, fragmented by growing up and being pulled apart because of their destinies, the other pair grow closer, stronger together than apart because they’re driven by love, a real force of will that fully shows when they stand up to the oracle. Meanwhile, I would have Yan Lin remain seemingly stationary - desperately trying to keep balance, keep harmony, trying to placate everyone until finally she loses her grip on both sets of friends as they’re pulled in drastically different directions. It’s her tragedy, more than anyone else’s - because Yan Lin is the one we understand the most, who is left to guide the guardians, to implore them not to repeat the mistakes of her own team. I think it would be sad but beautiful to have the sweet, healthy nature of kalinor to balance out the bitter tragedy of nerissidy, and maybe that’s why my brain is always so convinced they’re actually canon haha.
