[It’s taken her some time, to reach this point. She’s followed him on and off for over a week, since she woke with his scarf the only acknowledgement that he’d seen her. Now, she tucks it into her elbows, draped across one shoulder and tied loosely across her chest. It feels, somehow, like armour, a woven shield.]
[As the afternoon sun stretches longer shadows through the leafless limbs of the ribbon tree, she takes a calming breath, and situates herself across from where he sits, in the garden where people come to mourn. She’s only about ten feet away---near enough to be automatically noticed, far enough that he won’t be able to reach her without an effort.]
[She counts down from ten in her head. With each passing second, she feels more sure of her decision, that she needs to do this. And she can’t keep stalling and watching and hoping he’s a decent enough person for her to trust.]
[When she reaches zero, she lets her veil drop, and appears. She stands there, and waits for him to see her, and hopes there’s recognition. As much as she would like to smile, she finds she can’t manage it when she’s so nervous. Silently, she meets his eyes, then turns, and begins to walk slowly, heading towards the old chapel, the fabric of the scarf across her back hopefully stirring his memory and curiosity. She hopes he’ll follow, so she can be somewhere she feels safer, less exposed, and checks periodically over her shoulder.]
