Caair-hraie (pronounced kair-HRA-ee) means beach/shore chair. Ever relevant as we are easing lockdown restrictions here, and the term 'deckchairing' has hit it off. If you're unawares, it means - to meet outdoors in a social capacity usually in a garden, whilst maintaining distance and adhering to any other Gov guidelines. According to the dictionaries, the word for beach can also mean 'retreat/ing' I wonder if there's something to the duplicity of the word and this idea of distance? Is 'deckchairing' a thing where you are from? Or is this strictly an Anglo-Manx term? I wonder if the term was coined like this intentionally or unbeknownst? Part of the writers cultural DNA seeping out. I'm sure it's just a coincidence right? #erytraie #atthebeach #deckchair #deckchairing #caairhraie #socialdistancing #illustration #flashcard #language #learning #homeschool #isleofman #manxgaelic #gaelic #gaelg #illustrator #discoverunder1k (at Isle of Man) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNWvjEroGzu/?utm_medium=tumblr
