Caair-hraie (pronounced kair-HRA-ee) means beach/shore chair. Ever relevant as we are easing lockdown restrictions here, and the term 'deckchairing' has hit it off. If you're unawares, it means - to meet outdoors in a social capacity usually in a garden, whilst maintaining distance and adhering to any other Gov guidelines. According to the dictionaries, the word for beach can also mean 'retreat/ing' I wonder if there's something to the duplicity of the word and this idea of distance? Is 'deckchairing' a thing where you are from? Or is this strictly an Anglo-Manx term? I wonder if the term was coined like this intentionally or unbeknownst? Part of the writers cultural DNA seeping out. Askaid varrey means sea boil. Not a very attractive name for the anemone. This one pictured is the beadlet anemone which I've only ever seen in it's 'boil' or beadlet stage on Port Jack beach.
