Black Hair

Having my hair "black panther" (as people call it here) or natural in Brasil is a very curious experience. Black hair is still quite controversial, so there are definitely the older adults who stare at me and avoid being too close to me, or ask me if I shouldn't be putting my braids back in.

But then there are the younger people who treat me like I am the spokesperson for Black womanhood. They touch my hair, and tell me how brave and respectable I am for wearing my hair out. While I appreciate the affirmation, I'm not sure that this extreme is the solution either because it demonizes Black womyn who prefer to wear a perm, when sometimes they don't have a choice. I am fortunate and privileged that I don't HAVE to work for a company that won't pay me if I don't look white enough. I am class privileged, and I recognize that. So while I celebrate my roots (hah. I'm so punny), and hope to join with other womyn who are also embracing the kinks in their hair, I don't want to be endorsing the oppression of another group of womyn.

Tomorrow there is a "festival" of sorts, celebrating natural Black hair. I'm so excited, and I'm hoping that talking to other womyn of color will help me learn more about Black hair in Brasil
