NUPW MAY WALK WITH BLP - THE PUBLIC SERVICE could be in for a major disruption on Wednesday when the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) calls out public officers to a major meeting.And while the focus of the 2 p.m. session is set to be on salary increase proposals, yesterday NUPW president Akanni McDowall told the DAILY NATION that discussions surrounding the union’s participation in the Barbados Labour Party’s (BLP) Walk For Justice the following day would be on the agenda. McDowell said that while he had not been in contact with anyone from the Opposition party regarding Thursday’s demonstration, he would not rule out discussing the matter with Government workers who have not had a pay increase since 2008 when they got a ten per cent wages hike across the board. Insisting that he was politically neutral, McDowall added: “It is something that I have not ruled out. I guess I can discuss [the march] with my people and I should.

He took strong objection to the playing of dancehall on the airwaves during his address at the launch of the 2016 Parish Ambassadors Programme by the Community Development Secretariat at Gall Hill, St John, on Saturday night. “I am indeed very concerned about the escalation of gun violence, and in particular the escalation of violent acts that have claimed the lives of so many persons already this year,” he said. “So I take this opportunity this evening to call on each and every one of us to take a stand on this reckless behaviour.“I am equally concerned about the impact of certain types of dancehall music and videos, the impact that this is having on the minds of our citizens especially our young people.
LABEL PROBE - THE PROBING EYES of the Department of Commerce as well as the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC) will be trained on unscrupulous manufacturers from tomorrow. And the minister who has responsibility for commerce and industry is promising the two entities will launch a full investigation into information that some local manufacturers are removing labels from imported items and passing them off as being made in Barbados. Minister Donville Inniss was responding to executive director of the Barbados Manufacturers’ Association (BMA), Bobbi McKay’s revelation at Friday’s opening of the island’s premier trade expo, BMEX. McKay drew the “re-emerging trend” to Inniss’ attention and described it as a “subculture” in the manufacturing sector. She said the BMA would be going all out to stamp out the practice since it was difficult for locally manufactured products to compete with fake local goods.
FLOW & CWC UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP - CABLE & WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS (CWC) should be under new ownership from today. The long-time Caribbean telecoms provider is being taken over by Liberty Global, owned by American billionaire John Malone. Last November, Liberty, which has its headquarters in London, offered to buy CWC in a cash-and-stock transaction valued at £3.5 billion (BDS$10 billion). It is already the world’s largest international cable television company and one of the largest broadband Internet service providers. Last Friday in London, it was announced that the delisting and cancellation of CWC shares on the London Stock Exchange would take effect from today.
MAN CHARGED WITH BAJAN NURSE MURDER IN UK - A man has been charged with the murder of a Barbadian nurse at a private hospital in south London. Patrick “Pookie” Clarke, 68, formerly of St Patricks, Christ Church was stabbed several times at Southleigh Community Hospital in Brighton Road, South Croydon, last week.Clarke was a prominent member of the Barbados Overseas Nurses Association in the United Kingdom. A spokesman for the Southleigh Community Hospital, a private mental care facility, said: “We are greatly saddened to confirm that a member of staff lost his life following an incident in the hospital. “Our deepest sympathies are with his family, friends and colleagues. He [Clarke] was a valued and respected member of staff who will be deeply missed.”
WANTED MAN - Police are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a St Michael man in connection with serious criminal matters. Wanted is Ronald Raheim Rudder, 22, of 1st Avenue Gills Gap, Eagle Hall. Rudder is about 5’5” in height, slim, and of light brown complexion. He has brown eyes, a small nose, protruding ears and a low haircut. Rudder is advised that he can present himself to the police accompanied by an attorney-at-law of his choice. Police advise that Rudder is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached by members of the public. Anyone who may know his whereabouts is asked to contact police emergency at telephone number ‘211’, the nearest police station or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIPS (8477). Police have also reminded the public that it is a serious offence to harbour or assist wanted persons. Any person caught committing this offence can be prosecuted.
MR. BRIDGETOWN - A RIPPED and ready Roderick Waterman finally conquered Mr Bridgetown and Lamarr Coward celebrated his 21st birthday with the Mr Teenager title to open the 2016 bodybuilding and fitness season on a high note. Comeback kid Waterman and the promising Coward moved from second best to champions at the Combermere school hall on Saturday night.Waterman, 49, was the runner-up at the 2010 instalment of Mr Bridgetown but was stripped of his silver medal after a positive drug test and was banned for two years. Back for the first time in six years, Waterman was in top form and was a clear winner of the nine-man field that included former Mr Barbados Ramon Broomes.
MAKE AN IMPACT - DON’T JUST COMPLAIN or criticise; get involved. This was the exhortation yesterday from the new District Superintendent of the Barbados District of the Wesleyan Holiness Church, Reverend Dr McAthin Hinds, to Wesleyans and Christians who are bemoaning various ills in society. He was delivering his maiden speech, since he was elevated to the post in January this year, to the National Assembly of the faithful from the 39 churches across the island at a service at Kensington Oval to mark Pentecost Sunday. It was held under the theme: Experiencing The Power – Manifesting The Fruit. Hinds told the congregation in the Greenidge & Haynes Stand he estimated to be around 3 500, that he wanted to see Wesleyans become more involved with the youth, arts and entertainment, and other social issues, instead of complaining about them. He said young people in Barbados possessed brilliant, sharp minds and it would be a shame for the church to lose that intellect and talent to other avenues.
MEN URGED TO SPEND TIME WITH CHILDREN - IT IS NOT ENOUGH for men to contribute money weekly through the courts, but they also need to spend quality time with their children. This was the admonition given by Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite, as he took part in a march on Saturday involving a number of organisations, led by Action For Justice, to highlight the issue of child abuse. Brathwaite exhorted fathers to play a greater role in the lives of their children. “Most of the children that we come into contact with, in particular at the Government Industrial School, you can rest assured that if there are 50 children, 49 of them do not have a solid relationship with their fathers and that is a significant challenge,” he said.
