Today, March 22th, is my beloved Donaji’s birthday! A day like today 540 years ago (1479), on a 12 Flower day, this indomitable girl was born. Fun facts: - The flowers she’s holding and which I often draw her with are called cacaloxochitl in nahuatl which means ”crow flowers” (plumeria rubra). For obvious reasons they’re my favourite flowers along gardenias, but cacaloxochitl are native to mesoamerica and were valued highly for ceremonies and celebrations. Zapotecs call them Guiechachi. - Being born in a 12 Flower day in the ritual calendar means her calendar name at birth would literally be 12 Flower (Mahtlactli omome Xochitl). However, in the zapotec calendar the Flower sign (Xochitl) was instead Lord (Lao), so her calendar name would be 12 Lord (Benelao?). - The best thing about Donaji’s birthday is that it means it’s officially Spring!
