I have a real problem with how the story of Civil War was handled. Not just in every other way that I’ve mentioned, but in the way of how the narrative was couched.
Age of Ultron showed that Tony was tangentially responsible for Ultron, but that’s about it. He had his PTSD deliberately triggered by Wanda, chose to use the scepter to try to recreate an abandoned experiment (that, if you can’t tell, is the part in which he is responsible), and then had to deal with the mind that was freed from the scepter that called itself by the name he’d given it - Ultron.
And yet, despite the many characters who were also involved, and the fact that the entire storyline got pushed into play by Wanda Maximoff’s mistake, the entire story of CACW circles unendingly around Tony and Ultron.
The beginning of the story? A mother blames Tony for her dead son who was in Sokovia. Blaming him instead of the living creature known as Ultron, who had a mind of his own. Blaming him instead of Wanda, who as far as we know has still refused to even bring up what she had done to Tony. Blaming him instead of Bruce Banner, who helped him with the trials, or even the rest of the Avengers, who I guess were all there in the building with him but were quick to tell the world they had no part to play in it (that, while true, feels a lot like leaving their teammate to rot, which they did not do when Wanda screwed up).
And the end of the movie?
Oh, it turns out all the horrible things Zemo did, all the people he killed, the bomb he let off at the UN, the manhunt against Barnes, the search for the Winter Soldiers - all of it was because of the family he lost in Sokovia. Even though it’s never said explicitly, the message is that everything in Civil War happened, not because of Wanda’s fuck up, but because of Tony’s. Once again, everything, literally everything bad, is because of Tony Stark.
And you just gotta wonder how far that shit’s gonna go. Or, well, you once had to wonder. Now it’s all ‘Tony helped clean up New York and is Directly Responsible For Toomes’ Black Market Dealing’ and ‘Tony stopped Beck from using BARF as a weapon And Forced Beck To Turn To Murder,’ and I just. Can’t take it anymore. Every single damn story glosses over everything everyone else has done - the deliberate machinations and the way Wanda helped Ultron take over Sokovia in the first place, the fact that Carol Danvers literally went around murdering Kree which, while unknowing of their innocence, was so much more hands-on than anything Tony ever did, Thor’s starting a war over a ridiculously sexist insult, Bucky Barnes being manipulated into killing countless for Hydra (a manipulation tantalizingly close to what Wanda did to Tony), Steve’s poor leadership choices that led to what happened in Lagos - all of that gets completely wiped away, nearly erased entirely, because They’re Heroes, Actually. But Tony? No. Everything Tony does is wrong, and he deserves to be endlessly punished for it. The storyline demands it. At every turn.
So we have mothers and fathers of families lost in Sokovia constantly trying to get at Tony and even the whole Avengers group, but not a single person goes against Steve or Wanda for Lagos or Danvers for the Kree or Bucky for the assassinations or Natasha for the same or literally anyone for anything. Only Tony. Only and forever Tony.
